Yea they are not as light as a bow but do you complain about a 8 pound rifle or shotgun or muzzle loader too? For your information Barnett makes a lightweight crossbow that weighs under 5 pounds only problem is it is NOT A QUALITY Crossbow. I know I had one for my first xbow the chinese are copying them and they are cheaper yet both in price and quality. Excaliber Recurve crossbows are lighter than the compounds as they do not have all the pulleys and cams ect. A Horton compound weighs 7.2 pounds with a scope a bit more. A Excaliber Vixen weighs 6 pounds wth a scope a bit more so this weight your complaining about is no more than most rifles or shotguns expecially if they have a large scope on them. What you probably do not like is the bulk since the limbs go out sideways then horizontal and with a bow you do not have the weight of the stock. Once I got used to my crossbow the weight is not an issue. The heaviest Excalibers still weigh only 6.5 pounds. Plus I think they are more user friendly as they to me are not as loud as a compound and you can string them your self with the aid of a stringer just like you could with the older recurve bows.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I hear you on the rifle.....but 8lbs in a straight compact line with a sling is much easier than any current model of X-bow. Plus loading is easier! ;D.  All I am saying is there has to be a way to stuff lighter 'n faster into an X-bow design, along with the ability to cock those darn things without the crank gizmos and without having to set them down and yank 'em back.

There has to be someone out there than can design a leverage system that thru the use of a handle built into the stock, make cocking it easy. And with the compounds today being lighter, smaller and thinner I think the first company that takes that technology to the X-bow will simply sell a million of 'em.

Call me crazy (I've been called worse) but I can't see how it can't be done.

hum a walk in the woods cross bow vs. rifle the only thing that would make the rifle come close to being as big of a PITA as a cross bow would be to put bi-pod on it and fold it out and extend the legs ! at least it can be folded away !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

It all goes back to history.  At the battle of Agencout the brave noble English archers all had long bows and shot the dickens out of the nasty French knights and their even more nasty I-talian mercenary crossbowmen.
