custom mold for custom revolver
« on: September 04, 2007, 03:33:23 PM »
Veral,

I am expecting Hamilton Bowen to send me a what he calls his "finest hunting revolver" shortly chambered in 45 colt.  I intend to do some long range jack rabbit milk jug and rock busting.  It will have the oversize cylinder that fill the frame window.  I need some molds to compliment the 325 WFN I already have.  Two questions for you.

1.) Recommend the mold for trying to obtain ultimate in long range accuracy

2.) Recommend the mold for best accuracy (75 yards or less) with low recoil (say equivalent to 300 grains at 1,000 fps)

Thanks

Hamilton has put a proper name on his gun.  There is no pistol smith on earth who can match his work, in my not too humble opinion.

For ultimate accuracy, get a 320 gr LFN, with nose length to suit your revolver cylinder length.
For low recoil, I think a 280 gr WFN would make you happiest, plain base, because of the low speeds/pressure of interest.

Veral,

The distance from the case mouth to the front of the cylinder is 0.585.  Should I go any longer on the nose than 0.5?  That gives up bearing surface.  If we go longer on the nose will it need to be heavier?

Thanks,

Matt

The extra long cylinder space changes my recommendation to 340 grains, which will move out faster than a 320 from a standard Ruger Blackhawk at equal pressure, with more powder of coarse, but accuracy will be like a rifle, and you don't have to use all the powder space if you don't like too heavy recoil.

Bearing length of LBT bullets doesn't change with nose length, but only moves farther out of the case with increased nose length, which increases accuracy potential, decreases pressure with a given load, or allows more powder to be burned as the reloader chooses.

Ok Veral, 340 LFN it shall be.  What nose to crimp length do I put on the order form.  Wasn't clear to me from your response if we are going longer than 0.5.

Thanks,

Matt

Going longer than .5, if you want to make her snap a bit.  Like, keep your teeth clenched if you want your false theath to stay in when you touch her off.  That baby is going to rock back a bit if you use all the powder space!

Just give me the length from case mouth to end of cylinder and I'll give you a nose that fits close.
