Need Help..........
« on: September 13, 2007, 07:11:07 PM »
My reloading room is co-located with my rock shop, I was about to prime 200 22 hornet cases when my wife called me to help unload grocery's from the car, I made the mistake of leaving my 10 year old grandson, who was busy polishing a rock in the shop.  When I returned, I found 200 cases with the primers installed backwards.

My question, do I scrap them, or is there a safe way to remove the primers?  I am afraid to run them back through the de-priming die for fear of setting one off.

I would soak the primers in WD-40 for a couple of days and then carefully remove the upside down primers with the sizing die. Make sure you wear your safety glasses!

I've installed primers upside down and even side ways totally crushing them into unrecognizable crumbled pieces of metal in the past. I've decapped quite litterally hundreds of cases primed both properly and upside down. So far not a single primer has ever fired on me.

I'm not suggesting to you what to do just relating my personal experiences and what I do. You do whatever you feel is proper for you. It is my understanding that WD-40 is about a 100% sure fire way to kill primers or at least so folks who've gotten it on primers have said.

If you do chose to decap them by all means do wear good wrap around safety glasses in deference to any chance one might go off.

I totally agree with Graybeard.  Backing out live primers really isn't that big of a deal... just do it slow and gentle.  If you would be more comfortable killing them with WD-40 first then by all means do so.  Either way... safety glasses are a must just in case.

If you pop one or two, so what?  There's not a charge of powder underneath the primer.  Just a empty space.
When you're seating a primer with a Lee Loader, you put the case atop the primer and put a little drift punch thingie down the case and start tapping on it to seat the primer in the pocket.  If you're a little heavy handed, the primer goes off with a pop and flame comes up around the case mouth where your hand is holding the thingie.  Other than scaring the snot out of you (the first time) it does not harm.  My solution was to ease up and wear a glove.
Same deal here.  If you pop one, the first one will scare you.
How old is your grandson?  If he's not old enough to know to keep his @#!!^&# hands off stuff, he's not old enough to leave alone.  Make him deprime them.

A good overnight soaking in WD-40 and I am back in business.  Thanks for the advice.
