NEF 30-06 with an Aimpoint scope for bear hunting
« on: September 08, 2007, 03:29:01 PM »

I took the Choate stock off it, just didn't like it and may try it on something different...anyway I'm sold on the Aimpoint. I walked in on a bear just leaving my bait station last week and I have shot them before like that so it's possible, unfortunately,  I needed one more minute to get into a better position. He turned and headed off the trail just a few seconds too soon. It was going to be a close shot at 10 yards but I felt confident he was going to stop for that one moment once he saw me and BOOM! I had some stiff Sierra 220 grain pumped to the max for him.

I did sit one night for giggles just to see how well the aimpoint could still see into the dark. My bait station had some open sky above it and I was very surprised. I could have still made the shot well after my Leupold 1.5x4.5 vari-III called it quits. (I had a second gun in the stand.) We are talking a close 17 yard shot though, but like I say I could not see the cross hairs on the Leupold at all.

I've got an older Aimpoint in a one inch tube. I think they are mostly 30mm now?

Thats a pretty handy set up. I put one on my 45/70 it worked real good out to 40 yrds or so but after that the dot covered up too much target.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I stuck a BSA red dot on a rifle and really liked it.

However, I ended up chasing the groups all over the paper, trying to sight the thing in. A thought finally worked through the bone in my skull and assaulted the single functional cell. Clamped the rifle down and moved my head back and forth. Yup. Parallax. Horrible.

If you don't mind me asking, what model Aimpoint is that?
