Swan Lake Area Moose?
« on: September 07, 2007, 07:44:12 PM »

Hi All,

Being that I'm fairly new to Alaska and not yet a resident, I'm already looking ahead to next year when I can hunt as a resident (and try not to notice all the outfits I see on the road heading out on their hunting trip).  I was wondering if anyone has hunted or knows someone who has tried the Swan Lake Canoe Trail area in Unit 15 for moose?  I haven't canoed in a few years but would love to take a trip in this area next summer.  I was wondering if it's decent for moose and if a guy could get back in a ways via the canoe trail to hunt moose?  Or perhaps there are too many portages to make it worth the effort?

On a bit different note, the wife and I took a backpack camping trip up into the Peters Hills last weekend south of Denali.  I couldn't believe all the hunters we saw along the Petersville Road (30 miles from Trapper Creek to trailhead).  Somewhat reminded me of my last general unit hunt in Colorado for rifle elk... :)  Good luck to everyone this season!

Jeff

It's a great trip, but there are probably better places to hunt moose. Not a bad place to hunt black bears in the spring though. The area from the end of the lakes to the Moose River is a favored moose calving area. Late May/early June, find a dry spot, watch the moose, there will usually be a blackie within a hundred yards...

Hunt hard, shoot fast and trust your dog.
