Mannlicher forend surprise Oh NO !!!!!
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:24:56 AM »
Brown truck brought my forend I got on e-bay that was going to go on the .218 Bee project and much to my surprise it has a barrel channel for a bull barrel. This thing is 18" long(that makes it just right for a 22" barrel)  and the barrel channel tapers from 1" to .75" at the muzzle end. It fits perfectly on my fluted bull so maybe I'll paint it with black wrinkle paint and put it on that rifle. All of the posts I read said the barrel channel would be small I guess I should of asked before bidding and buying a super-light to convert to 218 Bee. Oh well a $58 mistake I can handle and hey this gives me a reason to do another project rifle. After all I still want a Mannlicher style rifle to leave for my grandson some day. Let's see what calibers are available in a 22" bull ???

22" bull barrels are available in 17M2, 17MR, 204, 223, 22-250 SS, 243 and 308. But the forend would work on any standard contour 22" also, so not all is lost.  ;)

Quick - I tried the Mannlicher forearm on the 35 Whelen today and you're right it would work with some glass bedding and not look too bad but it fits perfect on my fluted bull. I've decided that what's one more project so I'm ordering a .308 survivor and I'm going to make it into my full Mannlicher project and have Wayne re-bore and chamber to .358 Win. I'm kind of a fan of the 35's as I created my own wildcat in 1984 the 350 Jacob named for my son(3yo at the time) It's a belted mag based on the 300 WM case necked to 35 and fire formed to almost no taper and a 40 deg shoulder. It moves a 225 gr Nos at 3250 fps and would not be a cartridge for the Handi action. My son has the only rifle a Win 70 with Douglas barrel that I made for him(now 24yo). I think adding another 35 to our collection will be just fine. I will just have to look at other stock options for the .218 Bee project. Maybe a nice laminated T-hole. - F50

That's a great plan!!

The 350 Jacobs sounds like a great round, a belted 35 Newton Improved, sorta!!. ;)

The 358 sounds like a nice plan...and should make a pretty neat Handi for your collection...
