Reload questions on my on the way 30-30 Handi....
« on: September 11, 2007, 06:43:56 PM »
Can reloading data for 150gr flat point bullets be used with pointed soft points for Handi rifles? Anyone have a load that is best?  I have quite a bit of W-W 748 that I hope to use, that is if its acceptable for these rifles.

I would use TC handgun data, spitzer bullets are listed in several reloading manuals, Hornady lists W748 at 33.7gr start, 37gr MAX for 6 of their 150-155gr spitzers in their 30-30 TC data, COL 2.550", WLR and Hornady/Frontier brass. I've loaded the 150gr Nosler Partiton in my Handi, shoots very well. ;)

Care to share that load data Tim? I have a whole box of the Nos BT's I traded for at the last PD shoot. Just got another 30-30 Handi barrel too.

That would be it, thanks Mac!! ;D The only issue you may have in duplicating it is the Nosler partition are moly coated that I bought from Midway a couple yrs ago, don't think they're available anymore. I loaded 34gr to 37gr BL-C2 with a COL of 2.703" which is .010" off the lands, Rem 9½, Rem brass. The primers of the 37gr load look almost identical to the 34gr loads, so I'm gonna increase the load  2-3gr more in ½gr incresments and shoot some more. ;)

If you have any Varget...I would give that a " shot" as well...if you have time...both powder look pretty good..with the BL-C 2 pressures being a little lower...and the Varget being an extreme powder..you should get a little better velocity with the BL-C2 though..

150      Varget      .308"      2.550"      31.0      2172      31,100 CUP      34.5      2349      36,200 CUP

I'd recommend SS pistol loads also.  I've gotten great accuracy with the 130 gr Hornady spire (#3020) and the 125 gr Ballistic Tip using IMR's max load for 3031 for the T/C Contender.  The abrupt ogive of the Hornady bullet won't allow you to use IMRs COAL, but I seated mine just deep enough that the action will close and have not had any problems with pressure signs.

Good luck with the 748, my Handi doesn't like it nearly as much as the old standby stick 3031.

I also tested some 150 gr Speer BTSP, tested for velocity but not accuracy.  The Speer boattails are of slightly lighter construction than their spitzers, and I think they'd work well at 2400-2450 fps.  The Mag Tips also look interesting, but I haven't tried them.  Speer advised me not to use the 165 BTs at .30-30 speeds, suggested their 130 FP for single shot .30-30s.

I like IMR 3031 in mine.

a 150 grain flat point will print nice little groups.

I have some Nosler 150 gr. BT's I loaded a number of years ago (I think with 748?).  The load printed acceptably, but I didn't play around enough to match the accuracy performance of standard Remington CL's.  The Nosler's performed beautifully on whitetails.  I'll never forget shooting a nice 6 point who charged a 35MM film canister of Tink's lure in a blinding snow squall.  I shot him in that pose:  nose pasted firmly in the canister 50 yards away and quartering slightly away from me.  The BT traversed from left to right breaking the right leg on exit.  "Bang flop".  Of late, I've just found it easier to use plain "Green Box" stuff.  Accurate and deadly.

I'd guess if a guy wanted to spend the time, it would be possible to approach the long range performance of the Hornady "wonder ammo" with a bullet like the Nosler BT or equivalent.  Of course, we don't have Hornady's proprietary powders...  I also like Tim's suggestion about the 150 NP.  If you do the work, why not keep us "in the loop" about your results?
