Caliber advice.....
« on: May 03, 2007, 06:51:30 AM »
I am new to the site and amazed at the knowledge here. That being said, I am just returning to the target shooting arena and would like some advice. My goal is 1000 yds. I had a '70 generation 700BDL in .300 win mag that was a tack driver. I had to part with it some years ago and would like to replace the rifle. I had a friend with a FN Mauser in .220 Swift. It was a flat shooter as well. At the distances I want to achieve, would the .30 caliber be a better choice and what rifle manufacturers are recommended. I reload all of my ammo and have done so for years.

i'd look at a Remington Sendero, or Sendero II i believe they now produce; or i'd look at a Remington Varmint rifle.

however, for some competitions you need a rifle with a 5-shot magazine, which means a mod' to most of today's Remingtons.

the .30 cal' will have it all over a .22 cal' for shooting in the various (windy) conditions you'll encounter enroute to a 1000-yard target.

take a look at www.long-range.com for some ideas.

take care,
