Hear nothing of this bullet.
« on: September 28, 2007, 04:07:22 AM »
I hear all sorts of opinions, and have some of my own regarding different bullets. But I hardly hear anything about the 6mm 100gr Grand Slam. Someone gave me some (200) to try in my .243. I found out that it likes them allot if they are loaded anywhere from moderate to the higher velocities. BUT,,, I would like to hear if they work well/bad on deer. Anybody use them? Anyone recover bullets used? Do they open enough impacting at moderate velocities?
  What do you all think?

I think you can count on any Speer Grand Slam to deliver.  They have an excellent reputation.

I have no experience with 6mm bullets but have used the GS quite a bit in 7-08 and 300WM.  IMO in those calibres, they are a stouter bullet than the NP.  Which works fine with mulies and big Wt's.  If you're shooting 100 pounders, just make sure you shoot for the exit hole and you'll be fine.

All that said, I've got a sack of 150gr .308 GS's that I plan on using in a .300 Savage this fall on our 100# deer here in Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.     ;D

I wonder how the new GS bullets perform since their construction has been significantly changed and they now use a one-piece "HotCore"?  The 6mm bullets have always had a one-piece core, but the GS jacket is a lot different.   Speer says (no surprise) that the new bullets are 10% better - but the change was forced upon them, it was not a natural evolution.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll get a scope mounted on the gun and get her sighted in for this season.

Lone Star, I've wondered about that myself but I don't have any 6mm's and I've enough 7mm and .308 GSes of the old style to last me several life times.  I bought the .308 150's for a 30-06 before I moved to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia but here the hunting style calls for a different weaponry so I've been using a .260 and a .300 Savage and I've killed a couple of deer with a 7-08 and round nosed bullets. I'm gonna shoot a couple of these GSes thru water filled milk jugs at .300 Savage speed to see how they'll expand before I go hunting with them. If they don't work, I've a life times worth of Core Lokts. I know they'll work.

I shot elk and deer with the 160g 7mm's for over 20 years.  Took me that long to recover one and it destroyed both shoulder joints of a 5x5 bull elk.  Never lost an animal or had to track one (only one went more than a few yards and it went about 40).  They are pretty good bullets and the 100's should work well on deer.

Beeman

Let us know how they work out of your .300sav.  I may have to buy some to try in my .300sav. It seems to like Sierras but not Hornady or Nozlers. Mine's a Remington 722 bolt gun.
