Authorities believe a missing South Jordan man who was found dead in Tooele County with a bullet wound to his head was accidentally shot with his own gun.
A search crew in an airplane found the pickup of Michael G. Underwood, 63, near 12 Mile Pass early Monday, a day after he was to return home after an afternoon of target practice, said Tooele County Sheriff Frank Park. Medics found Underwood dead near the pickup with a gunshot wound to his head. His black powder rifle was found near him. Investigators determined the butt of the gun was resting on the ground when it fired, leading them to believe Underwood likely was looking into the barrel when the gun went off. There is no evidence of anyone else being at the scene, and no sign that Underwood intended to kill himself, Park said.
