Installing iron sights on a plain barrel
« on: September 12, 2007, 05:51:28 PM »
Can iron sights be installed on a plain slim tapered barrel by silver soldering?  I have a couple of rifles with no iron sights and the barrels seem to be very thin, possibly too thin to drill and tap.  I just like iron sights especially for backup.  I have a stainless steel Ruger model 77 .308 that I would like to add sights.  I also heard about someone who makes sights incorporated in the Ruger scope mounts.  If so do you have a link?  Thanks

Yes, iron sites can be installed by silver solder. Right for your barrel? I don't know. Brownells.com takes questions like this and they are pretty sure to know. Of course, they also sell silver solder. Brazing, brass solder,  might be better. Or you can clamp around the barrel. These were big on African rifles. Never did understand why they were so uncommon in US. Not sure about either brass or silver solder on stainless. But there are ways. Brownells stocks most of them. Then, of course, there are the sight companys. Lyman. Williams. Most have web sites and can advise you. Your concern is commendable. Now do the homework and see what your budget/tastes allow. luck.

XS Express, and these folks, both make peep sights that clip onto Ruger (and Weaver) scope dovetails.

I'd give Ruger a call. I believe the barrel band front sight that they use on their ranch rifle can be retrofitted.

Also, XS can do it. I've had it done on a Ruger Compact. You'll have to send the rifle to them.
