.338win / 22" barrel....handy?....good idea?
« on: November 17, 2007, 03:08:27 AM »
Hi All,

I have access to a Ruger 77, tang safety in .338.  It's kinda awkward for me and I was thinking of a rebarrel with a 22".  Looks handy to me, but, what do I gain and what do I lose (IE velocity, etc.)??

I own a .300win and a .375HH, so, this would be a project gun for fun.

what do you think???

It seems to me that you would gain a bit more noise, and loose a bit of muzzle velocity ( boy that took some great thought on my part, heh?). What you would gain is a rifle that is handier for you, offers no real disadvantage in power or ballistics, and is what you want. Why not??

If the barrel is just too long then why not just shorten it or have it shortened. Personally if you want a magnum cartridge for it's performance then you need the longer barrel to get the true worth or it otherwise you might as well have a standard cartridge and benefit from the savings it brings.
