goose opener
« on: August 17, 2007, 01:32:00 PM »
I have been preparing decoys, cleaning my favorite goose gun, getting blinds ready, practice calling and scouting areas for hunting. Basically I'm busting at the seams......LOL . I get like a kid at christmas waiting for our opener here in michigan of sept.1.  ;D
Is everyone ready for your opener?

I am definitely anxious for the opening day.  I do have a problem though, and it is one I have not had in years.  Too much water!!!

The recent Oklahoma storms have raised the lake level to make my favorite spot, too deep to hunt.

To solve that problem, I will change my plans and try some fields.

Good luck.

speck,...I am just in the opposite boat...we have very little water here where we hunt. But these recent rains will help out . our scouting has revealed nothing yet as far as any reasonable pursuits, but we will be out there waiting for them.
Good luck with your season,am anxious to here from you.

I have a HUGE problem.  The storm we had last week washed out the roads that head into the public hunting area I hunt.  I went scouting Tuesday and had a surprise.  It will be a two mile walk in without the roads.

My thoughts are this is pretty awesome for duck season if they don't fix it.  You have to remember I live in Oklahoma so they probably won't fix it for a while.  I can just ride my mountain bike back to the area and be the only one hunting.  I won't even try it with goose decs as I couldn't get enough in to make a difference.

Early goose may be switched to doves for me.

T minus one day.

specklebelly,  sorry to hear that. Are there fields or  such around the area that you could hunt as the geese fly in and out?
Maybe an ATV to drive in there with?
I haven't seen  many geese around here either though, but I don't get to have a dove season here so, I have to go after geese.

Specklebelly  it must be warm in Oklahoma also,  im in ND its been low to mid 90's and thats the forecast for next 3 days, ducks all over but geese are few and far between early season here will be a bust it looks like. But the doves are everywhere. Im thinking its to hot even to bow hunt kinda ,way to hot to hang deer without renting a locker..Well main thing is to enjoy the hunt...good luck to you...

It is all private land that is unavailable due to being leased.  Also for Oklahoma, all public hunting land (with the exception of two areas in the far southeast)  ATV's are illegal.  Which is actually good, that way I don't have to buy one.

Chacto - It is in the 90's here as well, which is actually a little low for the typical early Sept.

This mornings count:  2 Dove among three of us.  It was a low harvest but great to pull the trigger again.  Teal season opens in two weeks !!!

How did the rest of you do today?

I was on my way back from Bismarck this evening, I saw six geese in the air then a few more miles and about 20 in a field all this was along the Missouri river. The  weather cooled down some high of mid 70's today supposed to rain and be cooler for awhile......Maybe things are improving.

:o   well, I only got 1 goose for the early season here......not enough geese around to have good shooting opportunities . There isn't any fields to keep them around this year. So, we'll just wait now to see what the regular season brings.
