RUGER SUPER BLACKHAWK HUNTER

i just bought a used one that had around 50 shots fired threw it.
it came scoped with a bsa..took it out and tried it with scope shot 240 grainers at 25-50yds all holes were tight with most touching, took the scope off and had same results..
i am looking for any and all info on this gun i plan on deer hunting with it and would love to hear what you guys think..i have heard that rugers have horrible triggers but this one seems very crisp..
i havent hunted with a handgun in along time and i have regrown the passion for it again..

A great and rugged handgun. Alot of people say that the triggers are bad on the Rugers, but I have yet bought one new or used that had a bad trigger in my opinion, and I have hunted with alot of other brands. You will be well served.

I have shot a few Rugers with hard single action triggers with a gritty let-off.  These were new and got better with use,  I currently own one that has a clean crisp trigger.  It seems to vary from gun to gun.  Practice at the ranges that you will hunt.  Your pistol is capable of taking deer out to 100+ yds, but can you?   Will your hunting areas present those ranges? Good luck, sounds like you got a good start.  I recently got back into pistol hunting myself and claimed 2 deer and a turkey last year.  Been target shooting for years, but was in a state with very restrictive pistol regs, have moved and for the better for hunting.

Try to get a Leupold 2X EER scope for it.  THE SBH is probably the best hunting handgun on the market today for the money(maybe at any price.)  If you want a better trigger, a spring kit is available for cheap.

  All Hunters have the same prefix, 88.  Oh, wait, check your thread on this in the "Ruger" section, answered you there.

I would check w/ Ruger for the date of manufacturer. Ruger made them back in the early 90s, then suddenly discontinued them. The Hunters of more recent manufacture have beefed-up barrel threads to help hold the barrel in place under recoil when the gun is scoped. The threads on the guns made in the early 90s were different and I understand owners were having trouble with the barrels coming loose, which might have something to do with why Ruger discontinued them for several years.

I have one in 45 Colt, Bisley grip, that is quite nice.

as far as the trigger it fells mighty good the way it is dont think i want to change it but if i do i will check on that kit..

Those SBHH's are tough as nails...I have one in 44mag...

I installed a Belt Mtn base pin...Elmer Keith style...Looks great and keeps that base pin where it should be under hard recoiling 44 Rem Mag loads

WNY Whitetailer - What kind of mount is that and how do you like it? It looks like it would improve the balance of the gun by moving some weight off the barrel.

Ya got a GREAT GUN.
My first ever 44 magnum was a SBH.....IT ROCKED!.


The Hunter model, EVEN COOLER!
Happy with trigger, stay with it.

A minor suggestion, feel free to blow off.

Take 6 empty cases, ..put in chambers when bored.
With those in, DRY FIRE...slowly...aiming at a target on a wall, 1000 times...
Of course ,not in one night.
Did that with 5 Ruger handguns over a month.

Smoothed the trigger pull  like a gunsmith did it.
Good practice on trigger control too!

#1 - That is a Weigand Combat Handguns scope mount.  Here is the link to their website - http://jackweigand.com/Redhawk_Blackhawk_Bisley_Hunter.html  I love the mount...It is solid as a rock and as you already stated, it helps to better balance the gun...Although many shoot the gun with the included scope mounts with no issues as all...

#2 - It is a BSA red dot site...I already replaced it with a Swift 2x20 scope.  Not sure I will keep the Swift on the SBHH or not...Only time will tell.  I could have used the factory supplied mounts for the Swift but I opted to use the Weigand scope mount so that the scope is mounted back over the cylinder more and not so far forward...My personal preference...Not saying that it is better than anyone elses method of mounting their scope...

I have one of the first run of SBH-H, and yes the barrel did unscrew. Ruger repaired it and it's been fine since(8 years). Mine came with about the best trigger I've ever seen on a Ruger, it's 2lb 10oz and consistent.

I originally had a B&L 2-6X32 on it but wasn't happy with it, so I switched to a Millet red dot 30MM with a 5min dot. I love the setup now. I honestly feel the red dot is faster than the iron sights in this application. The Millet has been on there for 10 years and has never needed to be re-sighted, or zeroed. I just stick in a new battery every Sept and never worry about it. Whatever way you decide to go stay away from BSA. I've beaten 4 of them to death on guns with less recoil(3 red dots & 1 riflescope).

I agree with Dave on the BSA site...I switched mine out before I trashed it...I'm holding on to it...Might be good on a 22lr or something with similar recoil.
