Stock refinishing; Any suggestions
« on: September 21, 2007, 01:14:39 PM »
Well I've been thinking about sanding down my stock and foreend and making them a little sleeker and then I wanted to finish them with a walnut stain.  Has anyone done this?

i have done a few. it can be a tedious process as you have to first get the old finish out of the wood before sanding to do it properly. a good step by step process is available in John Traisters book Gunsmithing At Home. i used it on my first 2 and it worked well. in addition to that process i have also soaked the stocks in mineral oil for very long periods of time to remove oil based finishes. no matter what you have to get down to CLEAN WOOD, no stain or finish can be present when you begin refinishing. if not you will not get the resaults you desire. i would suggest getting one or books on the subject and read up before attempting it.
