Hornady FPB
« on: January 05, 2012, 03:07:54 PM »
Evening fellers,

I had to place an order for a couple things and spottted these. I have been wanting to go back to a full bore slug. I have a mold for a GPB at 385G but would like a jacket... (Do not like Power Belts)

My 777 is gone so its gonna be some testing to find what powder/bullet/primer combo I will be using next season. I wanted BP209, but the Sidekick I use has a 25ACP priming system... My Night is 209 so thats no problem. Not I really would like one powder and bullet for use in both.
I shoot T/C MAXI balls in a Renegade and T/C Maxi HUNTERS in a 54 Trade rifle. Both with Pirodex Select powder...

Advice is most welcome!

Subscribing to this one, I have been attempting to get these FPBs to group out of my Omega with little luck.

No complaints here with the 350's, don't know about the 300's. One of the most accurate bullets I have ever shot, in any rifle! NEF Huntsman.

Very nice shooting!!

Any reports of performance on game?

I been reading on the BH209 and gonna hold off. I really like the 25ACp performance. I have a couple cs s of RS as well as select to shoot up. I'll try that first. What I really want is to utalize my full 50 cal potential. No more sabots for me!

Busta, what primers are you using

I use several types of primers for testing and working up loads, but when I head for the woods it is either CCI 209M or Fed 209A in the rifles. In my ML pistol I use the NSI (European) primers.

Here is one from last season, shot through both lungs, and a short run. If you notice, I dragged her out of the devastation for the picture. Haven't been able to stop one in an animal yet. I know guys that used them for elk, so a little whitetail probably isn't going to stop one, at least the 350 grainers.I used my ML pistol and custom .45 Huntsman this season.

I just wanted to be sure that you were aware BH209 is not supposed to be used in sidelocks. Use FFG or Pyrodex only

Thamks for the call out!  Yea I did know and seems its not so good for my Side Kick too as I use a specail breech plug and NOT 209 primers... It would only be appropraite in my Knight. So I am gonna try the Pyrodex granular again... I have Both Select and RS, I just wnat to use full bore bullets.

Let me know how you do with the full bore bullets. I have shot my own home cast 400grn maxi balls out of my 54cal Renegade and they do quite well. I like making my own bullets but the darned molds have gotten super expensive. Over $80 now I believe.   :(

ROGER THAT!!!

I have a couple 35 Cal rifle bullets I would really like to have... but I am not a big cast shooter and have a hard time justifying the cost!!!

Back 15 years ago moma bought me a 385g GPB mold. I never really tested it out. I have a box of bullets I cast in nearly pure lead. I will be tring that too!

I took two deer with the 350 gr. FPB's last year over 100 gr. of Blackhorn.  The first was a doe at 60 yds quartering to.  Shooting offhand and pulled the shot right.  Hit her in the back leg.  Shattered it and exited.  Lots of blood. She ran (or I should say staggered rapidly) about 60 yds before falling right at the edge of a steep/deep canyon.  A quick follow up to the neck ended it.  The second was a nice 2x2 buck with lots of mass.  Old buck thin from the rut.  Shot was about 50 yds broadside right at dark and very foggy. Behind the shoulder, complete pass thru.  Dug for the flashlight and found out the batteries were dead.  19F so I went to the house.  Found it the next morning about 40 yds away.  Didn't find much blood but was in a very dusty sunflower field so I didn't look real hard.  With the accuracy of this bullet out of my Sidekick (less than 2"@ 100) and the ease of use of the BH209 I doubt I will ever use anything else.  BTW sight mine 3" high @ 100 and am good to go to 200.  The exact same as my 45-70 so I have to think less which is a good thing.
This is the day the Lord has made.  I choose to rejoice and be glad in it.

I know its older but.
I have a TC Omega that I started shooting the 300 gr FPB  / 100grs BH209, and the accuracy was OUTSTANDING...Took a 110# doe qtr on, thru shoulder bone (destoryed it) and passed on thru at about 30-40 yrds. Quarter size exit.
THEN I bought about 10 packs to be sure I had enough forEVER....Went to the range again after finding loose scope screws...and it was all over the place...figured it was the scope / mounts.....Nope. STILL haven't been able to get them right.
Will again try, but....WTH happened?  I liked them ALOT !

Any body tried these bullets in a TC Omega? ??? ??? ??
I tried them in my Omega with very erratic results, which is same I get with PB's.  Several shots might touch then a 8" flyer. My Omega just like sabots.
