Re-stock Ultra 308
« on: September 13, 2007, 10:00:03 AM »
:D I recently posted that I bought a new Ultra 308. I love the rifle but the stock doesn't fit me very well and slaps my face and takes the enjoyment out of this rifle. I was thinking considering  the Choate Varmint stock or possibly the Rollover cheek pc. stock instead and have a Sims put on the back. Has anyone went this route and how did the rifle turn out for you??? Thanks Jess

I've done a couple of rifles with the stocks from Gunstocks Inc. and they all turned out great. You just need to finish them. I am waiting for a Stinger stock from them now to go on my .308 Survivor. That wiill also have a Mannlicher forend from Gunstocks. It's a lot of fun finishing them to fit and adds a certain amount of pride when finished. Their Roll-over works great for scoped handi's. Good luck.

i did one with the choate stocks for my .22 hornet and .45-70 standard barrels. they offer a decent cheekweld and a steady grip. a bit heave to be carrying around the woods but they are excellent from a stationary position with either a bipod or steady rest. recoil absorbsion is excellent and i have not had any problems with forend fit or acuuracy issues. they shoot as well or better than the standard stocks.

My .243 had a youth model stock when I bought it, and the first thing I needed was a full size stock.

I went with the Walnut Gunstocks Inc. stock.

Love the fit and feel of it, and I cut it down quite a bit to get it just the way I wanted.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Does yours have the laminated stock and forearm?  If so, its too bad yours doesn't fit you, I just bought a 308 Ultra due to the beautiful laminated wood it has. I'd like to have a set to put on my Turkey model shotgun, that is if it'd fit.

I would take that crumby, face slapin' laminated stock off of your hands. ::)

Have you thought about a different scope and mounts? You have to watch the scope height to clear the hammer, but there are ways around that. If you lower your scope, the face slap should go away. You can bob the hammer and lower the scope, move the scope back to give better clearance to the hammer and lower it. You can buy a different scope that is longer (clearing the hammer at the thinnest part) so it could be lowered. Buying a long eye relief scope and mount it ahead of the hammer, thus lowering all the way down to the mount. Moving the eye piece back so the scope can be lowered some. Adding a shell holder to the stock and stuffing foam under it to raise the cheek piece and soften it. Or a combination of the above;)

If all of that fails or does not suit you, I WOULD take the stock if you have no use for it ;D

If your worried about the scope having to be too high with those laminates and getting face slap with them...do what I do...add a nice soft cheek piece that raises it some...Here is one I use...it's real inexpensive to make..and works real good...It's a Bob Allen shell holder I picked up for $4.00 at Walley World...I put a little soft foam rubber under it...Before I go hunting..I slid it back over the swivel stud and put a small hole in it so it doesn't move...It works for all of my rifles..and aligns my eyes with scopes sitting in high rings real easy...Even my hard kicking 45-70 loads don't hurt my face...It also puts the stock down in my shoulder pocket better...and helps with the recoil..

I've had real good luck with the Choate Varmit stocks and forends, improved  accuracy and reduced felt recoil. I have 5 Handi's with them........

I liked my Survivor much more when I restocked it into the cinnamon laminates

One other way you can have more adjustment on the stocks is to install a adjustable recoil pad too..This is a Morgan adjustable...it comes in the curved pad like this one...and also in a straight shotgun type pas as well...I do know guys who have added different recoil pads to the back plates to lengthen them

If you don't like the looks of the shell holder with foam under it...you can add one of these to the stock as well...They are available in different thickness and are self adhesive..I've used these for many years on my trap & skeet guns..They are available other places too

Mac,

Very nice looking stock you have on that gun.

Those adjustable recoil pads work very well. You can set them up so when you shoulder the gun, it fits you like it was custom made for you.
