handi forearm
« on: September 22, 2007, 02:42:39 PM »
hello;

have 2 handies, 223 and a 243.  each has the "o" ring trying to have consistent accuracy, but that fix does not really work.  has anyone  anyone glassed bedded the forearm?  if so how much?  does it work?  thanks.

I've tried using Acraglass doing just the barrel lug extension hole..and doing a complete bedding job on the forearm...I didn't like the results at all...I wound up using a dremel tool to remove all of it and went with a heavy amount of the RTV silicon. It made it much more consistent hot or cold...You can read about it in the FAQ's..http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums//index.php/topic,75256.msg465176.html#msg465176

I remove a lot of wood from inside the stock whenever glassing so the epoxy is what holds everything in place. Wood moves too much.

My .45ACP Marlin has a real Hoochy-Cootchy stock, and I'm about to glass the part that is _supposed_ to be free floating, just to make the darn thing hold still.

I tried something a little different, on the used 7mm-08 that I just acquired and fitted to my receiver using the JB weld method.

It's kind of a cross between the fridge magnet, and the silicon.

I had an old drink couzee that I cut into the approximate size of a fridge magnet with a razor blade, and placed it in the same area that the magnet goes, that being about 1" from the end of the forend.

I thought it might be a good dampener and kill any barrel harmonics, so why not?

I just returned from the range after shooting it, and I don't know if it made a difference or not, since I didn't shoot the gun without it, but I shot one inch groups with it at 100 yards.

Could be I've just got a good barrel, but with those results I'm not about to remove it to find out!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

rp,

I tried several different things with help from those here to get consistent accuracy and consistent P.O.I. from my 22 Hornet.

In the end, I shimmed and epoxy bedded the shoe to the forearm for better lock up, then dowel sanded out the forearm from the stud area forward  and added the O ring.

These two steps improved both.  It is difficult to determine the correct lock up.  I did so by trial and error shooting on my home range.  I noted this changed accuracy the most.  Because I don't have exact measurements to the thousanths of an inch for you.  I can simply say, my lock up is such that when I break the rifle open in the horizontal position it drops to wear the ejecter engages but does not allow it to engage, with out me applying downward pressure.  Previously, it would engage and just flop open all the way.  This adjustment helped the accuracy and was quite simple once I put my mind to doing it.  The float / O ring helped with consistant P.O.I. cold, warm, hot and from shooting sticks.  My Hornet is really quite accurate now.

If you choose there is also a shop that specializes in accurizing Handi Rifles.  They are a sponcer at rimfirecentral.com .............I forget their name but, noted they are quite reasonable.  He would glass bed & float the barrel, touch up the crown and adjust the trigger for what seemed to me a fair price.  Also does Green Mountain stub barrel conversions.  Just remembered the name...........I believe it's (censored word).

I hope this helps.  Don't give up,  it's quite simple and you may appreciate it more as I have once complete.
