Primer / Firing Pin Question
« on: September 15, 2007, 01:54:15 PM »
Primer / Firing Pin Question:

I'm very new at shooting and reloading.  Only had a .22 for 2 years, my .204 for about a year, and reloading for about 6 months.

My question is about where the firing pin should be striking the primer.  On my .204, it is not centered at all.  I've attached a picture as to where it hits the primer.

Is this normal and does it effect accuracy?

Thanks for your help!

I would say it is normal, form the marks I see on the primers it looks like it is hitting a little low, nothing to worry about.  Larry

If this was a BR rifle or any other good rifle it woud be a reject. Contrary to
the aboe statements it does effect ignition hence accury, specially when the inside of the punched flash-hole have still got the punched ridges. Most hand loaders do not remove them.

For proper fire in the the hole you want the flash in a straight line and fan out radially not bouncing off the side of the primer cup. You may not have noticed
that a primer has pointed anvil in the center, that is where the firing pin
should strike.

Perhaps this academic in an economic Handi rifle, where the man says it 's
ok as long as it goes bang. No it is not ok.

So should I sent my receiver back to NEF/H&R and have them fix the problem?

I wouldn't worry about it if it shoots good, it's been discussed before. If it doesn't shoot 1½"-2", and you've done all you can, contact H&R and ask em, but I doubt they'll do anything about the off center pin strikes, they'll replace the barrel if they feel it warrants it, but that's not enough to worry about, IMO. The pin strikes on my .444 are off about that much, and it's one of the most accurate and consistent H&Rs I own. ;)

Here's a thread at PM on the same issue, it certainly isn't Handi specific!!
