Will it shoot loose?
« on: September 21, 2007, 12:10:59 AM »
I guess this is just to rest my fears so to speak, but I just fitted my handi 7--08 barrel and did everything according to the FAQ instructions, and everything fits snug with no gaps, no motion, and guages to the specs, and smooth as silk, using the shim, and J B weld method.

This barrel took very little shimming and mainly just on one side of the lug where it made contact with the pin, so it's not totally rotating on the shim.

The repair I feel was done about as good as it could be done, but what I'm asking now is, how permanent is this fitting, and has anyone had to redo it sometime down the road after shooting the rifle a lot?

Life expectancy of the fitting repair would probably be a better way of putting it!

Thanks

That is going to depend on a couple of things. You mentioned most, How much its shot, Caliber and intencity of those loads.

I have never had to use the Devcon or JB weld to fit one. But I have shimmed with shim stock. The shim stock has lasted with no noticable wear for hundreds, posibly thousands of rounds.

 Good luck,

Only time will tell, I've not had any shoot loose yet, but I haven't shot all that much thru most of them, the first barrel that I did the JB shim on is a 270 Win barrel, it has about 120 rounds thru it, still fits perfect, I've shot about 160 rounds thru the 500S&W with some pretty hot loads, if any were going to shoot loose, it would be one to put to the test. The compressive strength of JB Weld is 10.7kpsi, so it should hold up plenty well and has so far. Fred, on the other hand, has had his Devcon only fitted barrels shoot loose, but he also shoots those a lot.

That's the answer I was looking for, and I was just curious and figured that you guys that have put in a lot of range time, and have done this type of fitting/repair would be qualified to answer my question.

I've never done this type of repair to a firearm before and wanted to hear firsthand from those who have, and what to expect!

it's simple enough to redo, if the need should ever arise, and it wouldn't be a problem to do!

In fact it fit a lot better than I expected, and these rifles are pretty simple!

I put a little gun grease on the pivot pin, so that should also cushion any stress from firing the gun, and should help to dissipate the shock of recoil.

Thanks for the replies!

Thats what I like about the handi rifles, they are simple and you can do most repairs yourself.I fitted a 223 barrel using the accura bedding epoxy that has the powdered stainless steel you add to it,and I've put right at 400 rounds through it so far ands its still as tight as when I did it.I'd like to try it on a bigger round just to see how it would do,maybe soon.
