454casull vs 500 S&W

I'm looking at getting a another barrel in a pistol caliber for my encore.  Using maximum effective hunting range as a primary consideration, which if either reaches out there a little bit better?  Medium size game is the focus.  Thanks,  Bill

As far as effective hunting range is concerned, I think they would be about equal.

If you want some range advantage, go with the 460 S&W Magnum.

I would love to but Indiana's new deer rifle regs say the 460 case is too long.  Thanks for the reply - that's kinda what I was thinking also range wise.  Maybe somebody has come up with something different.   Bill

You might want to look at the 357 Maximum the case is just under IN law I am having one built right now by Match grade machine, but it will have a .358 bore to shoot 180g hornady SSP bullet more range longer bullet better Acc.  Performs like a 35 rem in a pistol caliber.  Just a thought

I think with a 275 gr. bullet you can get a long distance shooter out of the 500 Mag barrel. I have shot my 500 mag out to 150 yards with great accuracy with the 275 gr. Barnes bullets.

No, the 460 is 1.790" long, 500 is 1.625".

Thanks Guys,  All good food for thought.  I'm seeing some posts stating 2200 FPS with the 454 casull.  I've not seen much data for 454 rifle loads.   I'll look at the other ideas given.  Thanks again,    Bill

FWIW, I get 1900+fps with 250gr bullets out of a 20" H&R 45 Colt carbine barrel, 2200fps should be doable with the Casull. I get 2150fps w/350gr out of the 22" 500S&W Handi barrel, to give you an idea of what to expect in the TC. I'm working on getting the Colt barrel rechambered to either Casull or 460S&W and shooting the 250gr and 300gr Hornady SST muzzleloader bullets they offer packed with sabots, it would be a great bullet to extend the range of the Colt/Casull for your Indiana hunts, would be flatter shooting than the 500 with less recoil.

Coyote guns makes a .460 barrel that accepts a slightly shortened 460 case to comply with IN law, if you are interested I know he has them on the shelf.

Reed,  That sounds like a great idea ballistics wise.  Would such a set up cause confusion with the legal beagles with a 460 stamp on the barrel.  Does it have to be an established or standardized pistol round or are wildcats included. The cut down brass would probably have the 460 head stamp as well.  I like the idea if it would fly.    Thanks,   Bill

I don't live in IN so all my info is second hand, but what I am told is that the rangers have a drop in piece set to over the legal case length, if the drop in measures too long you are busted, same for case OAL. I'm not sure what the law reads but it is my understanding that just changing the ammo is not enough, in other words I don't think it is legal to use a .460 revolver and only be shooting .454 in it, I believe the weapon itself has to conform to the law. Hence Coyote guns chambering the .460 short (not sure what he is calling it)

The rifle must fire a cartridge that meets the following specifications:

A) fire a bullet of three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of an inch (.357) diameter or larger;
(B) have a minimum case length of one and sixteen hundredths (1.16) inches; and
(C) have a maximum case length of one and six hundred twenty-five thousandths (1.625) inches.

There are no restrictions on the type of action or number of cartridges that can be loaded at a time. There is also no requirement that the rifle be unloaded outside lawful shooting hours.

These rifles with pistol cartridges can be used during the deer firearms season as well as at state parks during the special deer reduction hunts. They can also now be used by a youth hunter during the special youth deer season on September 29 and 30, 2007 as the result of an emergency rule signed by Director Carter.

Rifles cannot be used while deer hunting on the following federal properties: Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, Crane Naval Support Center, Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge and Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge.

Some cartridges that will be legal include the following:

357 Magnum
.38-40 Winchester
.41 Magnum
.41 Special
.44 Magnum
.44 Special
.44-.40 Winchester
.45 Colt
.454 Casull
.458 SOCOM
.480 Ruger

with the new pcr season coming, my question is tc makes a barrel for the encore that shoots 45 lc 454 casull and 460 smith. the first two calibers are legal the last is not. the barell is marked 460. would it be legal to use this barrell with legal ammo. as long as you had no 460 ammo in your possesion. thank you
