S&W pre 29 5 screw .44 mag.
« on: December 05, 2008, 06:13:24 PM »

I recently got this nice old 5 screw pre model 29 ..44 mag.  One of the 1st ones made with the original blue leather (leatherette maybe) covered box with the several small tools that it came with but not with the ORIGINAL GRIPS.  Does anyone have a set of checkered N frame grips with the diamond on the screw hole that they would be willing to sell.  Please let me know if you have, this old gun needs some. Thanks,

Really nice find!  Good Looking pistol.
Not Smith but if you look at the "Heritage" at www.eaglegrips.com/heritage.htm you might like like what you find.

Thanks BF45, what I'm looking for is grips made by S&W just like the ones the gun had when it was made.  That would be N frame size checkered with the diamond over the screw hole.  Very similar to the ones on the gun now.  I believe the originals were walnut.

From the comments in your reply, I believe that you may not have checked the link, but no problem, I understand wanting original to the gun.
Sill a nice piece!

BF thanks again.  I did look at Eagles grips and they do have the diamond but otherwise they are like the later grips.  The older ones had a different checkering pattern.  I have a box full of the newer ones.  Personally I hate the S&W big wood grips, wouldn't have them on a using gun but a collectable gun has to have the
original grips.  I know there is some out there somewhere.

Well, wrong again, I looked up the then new .44 in a 1957 Gun Digest and the pictures showed the same grip I have except it had the diamond on the screw hole
and while the other N frames had the walnut the new .44 had Goncalo Alves so I need to find some just like the ones I have but with the diamond.

I have  4 screww pre model 29.  It isn't collectable because it has been refinished at least once(nickelled with gold hammer and trigger.)  It is a good shooter.  I put houge monogrips on it.  i understand you want to keep it original.  Try Gun PArts .  They have other parts for your gun, sometimes they have grips.

Go over to the Smith & Wesson forum. You can find your grips there. They will not be cheap but I am sure you could turn some up.
