Author Topic: I screwed up big time!!!!!!!!!!! (Read 1254 times)

I got my presses mounted tonight. I figured I would get a head start on loading some rounds. So I thought I would decap and resize some of my Hornady brass. The very first one the decapping pin got stuck in the shell. I cycled it once and was not sure I went all the way. So I tried it again and the pin pulled out of the die. I Will be damned if I can get it out og the shell. I guess tomorrow I can take my tubing cutter to it and I think I can free it then. I have a limited amount of tools with me here tonight and can not free the pin with them. Do you have any ideas. Dale

Ok now I have another problem. I think the reason the decapping pin got stuck is because I never tightened the collet. They are going in and out just fine now but in the shoulder of the shell it leaves a dent. Why? Dale

you are probably over-lubing.the excess lube is forced into one area and cannot be compressed resulting in a dent,or more.it takes a while to feel the lube amunt out,practice practice,lol,good luck adker

I just talked to a buddy of mine that has been reloading for 30 years. He told me to back the die out just a little. Well it worked. I no longer have that little dent in the shoulder. I asked him if I should throw those shells away with that little dent and he said that dent will come out when I fire the round. Thanks Dale

By backing out the die you have in actuality neck sized only. Most of the dents in the shoulder or neck area are just what was posted earlier. Too much lube on the case. By backing out the die, you have left an area for the lube to go without compressing the brass. I'd definitely would check the rounds in the rifle though before doing anymore. Just to be sure they fit the chamber. And they probably will not fit a different rifle with the same chambering, but might.

He did advise me to check if the cases would chamber in my rifle. Thank God they do. Even the ones with the little dent in the shoulder chamber just fine. Dale

You just learned the most important lesson any loader can learn , if something seems wrong , STOP and find out whats wrong before you go to the next step .

You did GOOD .

As for the dents , just cut back on the lube a touch and you'll be fine .

Cograts on getting started reloading Dale,one thing about solving problems is once you do you never forget,so helps you long term.One thing I do for decapping pin adjustment is once I have it set where it pops primers out,I run a case all the way in and loosen it so it will float and bring case down till you feel the neck expander just starting to expand neck,tighten the decapping lock,and presto you now have the expander centered.Good luck and keep us updated!!

Good day gentleman don't mean to hijack the thread but am wondering where you get that wax spray lube. have never heard nor seen it. thanks for your time. I have this prob as well and it frustrates me to no end

Dale,

You might want to spray that die with degreaser and wipe it down when you change over to the One Shot. It won't hurt if you don't , but just incase there is some old lube stuck in that die from all the excess. Don't worry,...been there done that. I got two cases stuck before I learned to use more lube. And that was 2 in a row!

Good tip on centering the expander, never even thought you had to.

You may need to take your dies apart and clean them as well. Did ya clean them prior to using for the first time? A little alcohol on a q- tip works great.

No I never did clean them before using them. I bought them new and did not think I had to. It never said anything about that in the instructions. Thanks Dale

Ya. Especially if they are new, they have a pretty good layer to keep em from rusting up before a happy consumer buys em.

down the road you mght give imperial die sizing wax a try. a little goes a long way,and it does an incredible job of lubing the cases.

You may find a wide range of experience w/ the Hornady spray lube. I had more problems w/ denting w/ this lube than anything but the nasty RCBS pad lube. I'm now one of the Imperial case wax guys.

That is OK Dale. I just messed-up myself. I had a piece of Military (looks to be bernadan primed) mixed in with my 30-06 hunting brass. Went to decap it and shattered my pin and bent my rod (then I broke it trying to unbend it). Each little mistake just serves to remind me, slow down and rethink something if it doesn't feel right. (Now I have to see if anyone locally has that part). Oh well, guess I will set up to load some more .223 until I fix my 30-06 dies.

I am a big fan of lube pads myself. The one thing you have to do is let the lube settle into the pad before you use it!! It will soak in after a while, and then they leave a good even film on the case, without any globs. -

There shouldn't be any lube on the shoulder or neck in the first place!! The walls of the cartridge are what is going to get it stuck in the die, so they are the only part that needs lubrication.
