Elevating screw for full size mountain howitzer
« on: September 30, 2007, 08:39:54 AM »
 Howdy

What should a guy use for the elevating screw on a full size mountain howitzer?

The plans show a 1 5/16" coarse thread screw about 9.5" long.  Is there something readily available that I could use?  Is there something from a junk yard that would work?  I would appreciate any ideas.

  Thanks
  Jack ;D

There is a size close to what the plan calls for at www.mscdirect.com   1.250 - 5 Acme roll thd. rod in a 36" length is available in 1018 steel for $46.96.  We order lots of things from these folks and their service has been great.  Larger sizes are avail., but the prices go up VERY quickly as you go bigger.  Post a picture of your howitzer if you get a chance.

Take a look at discarded desk swivel chairs.  Some of them have a square thread on their shaft.  Maybe a little small for a full scale, but they seem just about right for the smaller carraiges.

Stoolman6 has the numbers for you.  These are the same ones we were looking at.  The right hand is $67.09 and the left hand is $46.96.  You just have to decide which is right for your use.  Good luck on this project.

Take a look at post jacks and bottle jacks.  They're about the right diameter and you've got all the pieces.  Can be found at flea mkts and yard sales too!  (With the right patina already applied.)
