Anyone who has used taps alot knows that oh so screwed feeling you get when you break a tap off.
Well if you have a small tap set you need one of these. I had to order one to remove a broken tap on a motorcycle. I had my doubts but said what the hay. When I got it I understood how it would work. It has these fingers that slip in the flutes of the tap. You have to blow out all of the metal chips out from around the tap to get the fingers in all the way. then I just twisted the extractor back and forth a couple of times each time blowing more chips out. Then I just screwed the broken tap out. They run just under ten bucks and the extra fingers are just under five. The only place that I've found that has them is Brownells.

  I have several of them, some are 3 flue and others are 4...  You have to buy the right one for the tap you have.  They don't always work, but when they do they save you a lot of messing around!  I think i bought most of mine from   http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/nnsrhm??KNC-T7L391316886

The tap extractors have saved my a$$ many times. Working in a machine shop in my previous life, the "tink" of broken taps was common.
After using thread cutting oil used primarily for the pipe threading machine for years, we were introduced to Tap Magic cutting fluid. From personal experience, this stuff greatly reduced the number broken taps. I'm not sure where it can be found as we got ours from an industrial supplier. I'm sure a google search would turn up a source.

  Tap magic IS really great stuff!  I've used a lot of it over the years...  I use it for both drilling and tapping...

I use Kroil and reverse twist drill bits.  Those left hand drill bits will get out most broken bolts but they are very expensive.

I got a set of 4 left hand drills at Harbor freight for $3.00, and regular break fluid is the best cutting oil for taps I have ever found.  Larry
