Lyman Front Sight 17A

Lyman says to measure the front sight from bottom of Dovetail to the middle of the aperture.  I measured mine and it measures .584 is that standard with most Buffalo Classics.  I took it to range today with my new Smiths Ladder Sight and had a hard time with it shooting to high.   Would a lower front sight help this situation?  Lyman has three front sights .404, .494, and a .584 I think I need to make a change to one of the lower sights.  Or is there a better front sight to use with the Smith Ladder Sight?

That depends, from what I've gathered, they come with the .494" or .584", I have a .404" in mine as does Bernie that works great with the Smith sight. A lower front sight will raise point of impact. You need a taller front sight, the 17A with bubble level comes in .750" . The 20MJT would work, also.

I know when I bought the Williams fp for my  BC  one of H&R's gunsmiths told me to use the  Lyman 17AUG , which is .584 in height.  You might want to install a Williams shorty ramp  and do the math (Williams web sight has the formula) and install a ramp ad w globe or blade front . you will needs a taller front sight  to bring your impact point down.

haveyou done the oring trick is your barrel floated if your forend is puting preasure on the barrel it will shoot high,your the first one to say it shoots high with the .584 that i no of. heres a pic of mine
