MGM Barrels
« on: September 23, 2007, 03:34:24 AM »
I have heard many good things about them. I have some questions about them since i am thinking about ordering a 17inch stainless steel 7mm-08 with the scope base in mattle finish. Are they accurate right out of the box?  How durable are the barrels and do you have to do anything to the frame to make one right? any other info would be nice

I have three, albeit they are Contender barrels they are very well made and required no special fitting. Jeff and Kerry do an excellent job and normally their turn around time is 4-5 weeks. My .357 max carbine is "prairie dog accurate" at 150 yds. Given the caliber and bullets I consider that a testament to their quality. My .204 Ruger barrel is a whole nother story.....it has a reach well beyond 400 yds. Unless you specify something else they use Shilen barrel blanks that in my opinion are as good as anyones. As with all the TC custom house barrels I am aware of, technically they don't 'make' barrels, they chamber them, weld a lug on and add parts.
For reference if you take the price of a stock factory barrel, double it, that will tell you about what a MGM barrel will cost you. But that mirror finished bore will clean up so easy that by itself almost makes it worth it.

You'd be hard-pressed to find better quality than what MGM turns out.

Right now, from my experience, the two best custom barrel makers are OTT and MGM. SSK still offers good quality and relatively quick turnaround, but the workmanship is not what it was during their heyday in the mid-80s to early 90s.

Lastly, you may want to check MGM's existing inventory. These barrels are ready to go and discounted over the standard price. The web addy is www.matchgrademachine.com

I waited to post, since I had an accuracy problem with my rifle.  Turns out that the problem was the scope, and nothing to do with the barrel.

My MGM barrel fit perfectly and shoots perfectly right out of the box.  It's a 16.25" heavy barrel in .308.  Note that I haven't tried a wide variety of ammo, and I'm not looking at competing at bench-rest shooting so I can't comment on hair-splitting.  As it stands right now, though, I've proven to myself that it'll put meat on the table out to 200 yards.
