getting a .223

I was just woundering on a good round for my new gun? Its a 2007 ss handi with sin. stock in.223 never shot. From what I know its 1 in 12 twist. I will be hand loading also so if someone knows a good mix or combo from powder to bullet and primers. That would be great. 1st post and wont be last ;D  Thanks Adam

I have a Rossi single shot .223. It loves 55 grain Midway blue box Pointed Soft Points over 25.4 grains of IMR 3031. It also likes the Nosler Ballistic Silver Tip 55 gr over the same load.

Welcome quball, is it Superlight 20" or 22" standard or bull barrel?
Most on here have liked the 40 round White Winchester 45 gr hp from Wal-mart for a factory start. Get brass that way if you don't have it and have a starting point. Are you reloading right away? You can search and read the FAQs at the top of the page for more info. Good luck

be sure to try the 55gr FMJ from American Eagle; inexpensive yet very accurate.

I wouldn't trust a word that quball guy says. ;) He ain't worth even listening to.  ;D  ;D :D LoL

All joking aside guys. This guy is a long-time friend of mine from way back in high school, some 16-18 years ago. He's a Navy veteran, a good father, and hard worker. Let's give him a warm GBO welcome!

When the weather turns warm again in N. IL, we'll do some shooting out back in his fields to see what the .223 Handi really likes. Chances are, we'll split a box of that Win white box 45 grainers. ;) His rifle has the standard contour stainless barrel. I know, cuz he got it from me, kinda sorta. ;)

By the way, his parents chose a great name for him too. ;) ;D

Standard contour 22" stainless 223 is my next PLANNED barrel :D
Let us know how yours shoots. Whats your use Varmints, predators, misc?
I like Varget so far but others may work good in yours. I have a Superlite and a heavy 24" 1:9 Haven't done much with the h.b. yet.

Be careful if Dinny offers you anything mysterious to eat ;D

Yes quball does play 8ball and there is a couple of Adams up here. ;D I plan on a little of both yotes, groundhogs, or what ever goes by in the field. ;)

Besides, when we play 8ball or pool in general, as a team, we always win. He can really shoot pool.  I'm still trying to teach him how to shoot a rifle and shotgun. maybe someday he'll  be as good as me. ;D ;)

Got mine (1/12 ejector) used only because there was a worked up load using 55 grain FMJ that was said to shoot 0.5" in it. 25 grains of Varget is 2240 shots per 8lb jar or about 6 cents of powder per shot. All theoretical so far.

Thanks guys for all the welcomes. Yea having Dinny as a friend has its advantages and disadvantages as well ;) A medic in the Navy was called a pecker checker LOL So what do they call them in the Army?  Anyway Adams a great guy and a great friend. I have his back if sh*t hits the fan.

Have a 223, haven't reloaded for it yet.  Just buying up bulk ammo when I can find it at a good price.  My reloading books list a bunch of powers for the round but two have my interest.  IMR4198 and IMR3031.  One old book (Hornady) has 4198 as one of the two the most accurate in thier aggregate of testing.  

Recently picked up a 45-70.  Interesting in that it seems either one of these are well liked by folks here for their Gov't reloads.  So I'm looking at these for dual use.  Have brass and boolits on the way so no real info for you.  Just pondering the possibilities.
