Hunting Season?
« on: October 03, 2007, 01:50:21 PM »
Thanks for everyone response to my previous post.
In SC our deer season starts in Aug 15th thru Jan 1st, we buy up to 5 doe tags @ $5 each, have 16 doe days in my county, and no limit on bucks on Private land (rifle, handgun, bow is my choice) This is HEAVEN to me. Hog season is year around.

How do the seasons compare out there?

In Pa , we have 2 weeks of  " reg firearms season " which includes handguns, rifles , bows and muzzle loaders...for 2 weeks.  Usually starts the Monday after Thanksgiving.  Also there is a special season for bow only , started last Saturday runs for 3 weeks I think...Of course there's a special season for muzzle loaders , both traditional ( flintlock ) and in line.  We're allowed 1 buck, and depending on where you hunt and the availability of tags, you may get luck to draw several doe tags.  ( $6.00 / tag).  Our deer herd has been whittled down pretty bad, the big paper mills and insurance co. have control over our Game Commission. Seems to be lots of deer in suburban areas....where we have trouble getting to them, housing developments, malls , etc.  Where I used to see 25 - 35 deer in a days hunt....now I see 8-10 per week !  Of course there's an antler restriction also, depending on what area your in, its either 3 points per side or 4 per side.  Lots of private land also, every things posted, its pushing the average hunter to public land creating an over crowding.....We also have bear season, 3 days just before Thanksgiving.  No baiting, no dogs , most hunters drive off slashings etc.  Interesting post , hope others respond...nice to see what the other side has to offer.

In Illinois bow season starts Oct. first and ends on Jan. 17th except you can't bow hunt during firearm season. Which is the weekend before Thanksgiving (Nov 16-18)and the first weekend of Dec.(Nov 29-Dec2) There is also a muzzleloader only season(Dec 7-9) You can also use a muzzleloader only permit during the second firearm season, the final firearm season is Jan 18-20. It used to be handgun only but they changed the rules a couple of years ago. That was nice as a lot of people didn't hunt with handguns and the woods were almost always empty. Now that you can use a shotgun a lot more people are out.
