True to my tinkering nature I am destined to keep messing around with a great shooting rifle, my .444 Marlin SS Ultra.
One of the issues that I am addressing is the low comb on the thumbhole stock. I want to get a good solid cheek mount on the stock, but the scope is going to have to come down. I have high cheek bones which make this more of a challenge.
First, I have a set of Burris Zee low rings that will allow it come down to where the bulge around the adjustment knobs is barely above the rail. I have access to a mill though, and could machine out the area below the bulge and let it sit lower if there were lower rings available.
Secondly, I purchased one of the Warne silver scope rails to match my SS barrel. I noticed it is a fraction lower than the standard rail I have on it now. Does anyone know the lowest profile scope rail offered for a Handi? My other option is to order a ball end end-mill that matches the barrel contour and machine/lap the Warne mount that I have on hand.
Last, I know the hammer is going to need modification and that is not an issue. I have even conceded that I may need to have the hammer extension on the left side to avoid contact with the barrel latch lever. I'll address this when I remove it to perform the trigger job.
