Saw a 12ga handi shotgun yesterday. Barrel cut down to 19 inches and there were three holes drilled into the top of the stock to store three 12ga shells right up to their rim.

The previous owner had also drilled three holes into the side of the stock so you could push the shells "up" to be retreived.

I have seen this once before........anyone else?

Pics of your set up if you do?

Ive thought about doing the same thing. But what i'd do is cut a notch at the top of the hole so you could get a grip on the rim, not needing a second set of holes, i think the less holes the better for structural intergrity of the stock itself. another thought, what prevent the shells from falling out if the rifle is tipped when in the field ?

any way to line the hole with a rubber grommet/o-ring to grip the shell so it could stick up off the stock a bit?

That is a good idea. There were three shells in his stock. A rubber O-ring or rubber lining would be effective.......maybe even too effective. You might have problems taking the shells out.

well im not sure how you would set the o-rings into the holes.... if you could figure that out, you'd have something.
the only speed feed stock i ever saw was for a 12 guage, and if this setup works out, i'd like a 410 or even a .22 done up this way

A lot of the old European sporters use a similar method called a "Cartridge Trap" it amounts to a steel or brass strip recessed into the bottom of the butt between the pg and the toe of the stock with a hinged cover that is contoured to match the original wood shape.
I have a set of plans somewhere to build one out of a piece of brass strip and a length of ½" steel pipe split lengthwise.
