Problems crimping STS hulls?
« on: September 18, 2007, 07:11:12 AM »
I'm hoping someone here has run into this before.

I cannot get the crimp to close up on 12ga. STS hulls.  There is usually a hole in the center of the crimp where I can pour out shot.  AA hulls work fine but my supply of AAs is slowly dwindling as they split.

I have this problem on both of my presses; a P-W 375 and a P-W 800.  Do STSs have to be taper crimped?  I've turned the crimp down so far as to cave in the petals and backed it off to barely get a flush fold without noticeable improvement.

I'm loading 1oz of shot in CB TGT-12 equiv. wads over WST powder.

Ideas?

Thanks!
Cordially,

I've never used PW presses so honestly have no clue how you adjust them but with MECs it's not uncommon to need to make adjustment changes when switching between hull brands. For me the problem is especially aggravating with the 28 gauge so I have one press for Remington hulls and another for Winchester hulls.

On the MEC press there is a cam you must adjust to remove the hole in center. Is there some similar adjustment at the final crimp station on your PW?

GB,

Thanks for the response.  If there is a method similar to MEC's cam you describe, I'm at a loss to find it.  The owners manual I got with the 800 is dated 1976 and leaves a bit to be desired.  The 375 my Dad bought in the same time frame.

Maybe I'll try calling P-W.  Novel idea.

Thanks again.

Increasing the hull taper will close the holes. Sorry but I'm not familiar with how to make this change on the PW's. I'd suggest calling the factory, unless you already know how to change the taper on the finished shell.

Thanks.

These presses were built without any taper crimping ability.  I just e-mailed the factory; waiting to see what they say.  I suspect it's a $100+ upgrade to convert to a taper crimp in the final crimp station.

I suspect you have a 375b which dosen't taper crimp.
try herehttp://www.reloaders.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=136

they also make one for the other press also just browse..
third eye blinds the other two.

If you can't fix the problem  a common solution is to drip a drop of candle wax over the small hole. Old trap shooters trick.
