Hunting near the AK oil pipe line
« on: September 30, 2007, 08:21:28 PM »
What are the rules for hunting around the the AK oil pipe line?  Where would I look to find the laws concerning this?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

When I was in Alaska last time, about 8 years ago, the Hunting Regs spelled out a minimum distance from the pipeline to discharge a firearm, think it was 5 miles, but it may have been changed. If no one else chimes in with more recent info, check with Fish & Game. Mark.

South of the Yukon, DON'T SHOOT THE PIPE!  North of the Yukon you have to be outside of the 5 mile corridore to shoot a firearm.  Archery can be used right next to the pipe.  again, Just don't shoot the pipe.  The pipeline runs right behind my house, and I hunt there all the time for grouse and rabbits.  The pipe right of way is good for varmit hunting also.  Good cleared area with good long shots.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

The pipeline is an interesting dilemma. It is above ground, underground, crosses rivers and mountains.  We discussed this on another forum two weeks ago.  In the end I emailed the attorney in Anchorage for F&G to ask for a clarification.  To paraphrase them:  The pipeline is considered a drive-able surface. Henceforth it falls under the classification of a road.  You can not shoot from it or across it. Technically, not even with a bow.

This makes sense as no one knows where the workers are or working.  There are also monitoring connections, the pipeline itself and support buildings all along the route.

Up north, along the Haul Road is an archery only hunting area.  So from the center of the pipeline out 5 miles you may not hunt with a firearm.  You may also not use a motor vehicle to travel from the road out. (Some exceptions spelled out in the reg book in the units concerned.)

I hope this explains it clear enough.  I know some may not want to hear it.  In most cases though, I think whether or not you get fined is at the discretion of the officer.
