I looked at 2 nice rifles, one from Cabela's and the other from Bass Pro. I also talked to Savage since neither rifle is carried on the Savage web site or catalogue.
Savage makes special model rifles for both Cabela's and Bass Pro, that is not marketed anywhere else. Both have walnut stocks and sells for about $599.
The Cabela rifle is called a 114 North American Classic and is cross between standard Classic and the Euro Classic. It has the walnut monte carlo stock and iron sights of the Euro, but has the hinged floorplate of the Classic vice the detachable box magazine.
The Bass Pro model is called the the 114 Compact. It is the same rifle, sights, and action listed above, except it comes with a straight walnut stock typical of the American Classic. However, it has the butt shortened approximately 1 inch.
I talked to Savage and it is defiinitely an adult rifle and not a youth model stock. It's just that Bass Pro asked for the shortened stock for some reason, so they can call it "Compact". The fore end is the same dimensions as the others, with the only difference being the reach from Butt to trigger.
For me I've found the Ruger rifles tend to have a shorter reach than other rifles such as remington, but I've never measured. So it may be my perception. However the Bass Pro rifle feels like a Ruger to me.
