Hammer extension for Browning BLR
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:16:20 AM »
Does anyone make one? If so, can someone give me the contact info in some form other than a website. Our firewall won't let me go to most sites that are gun or hunting related. Thanks.

Bamasnyper:  Note that the Hammer Extension that Tim gave you info for is only usable on the original (1969-1980) BLR and the '81 BLR (1981-1994) models.  From 1995 on, BLRs have a folding hammer which precludes the use of any hammer extension.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

I checked last night, and mine does have the folding hammer, so, I guess I am out of luck. Thanks for the info.

Can the new folding hammer be replaced with the old style hammer?

My 1991 '81 BLR has a folding hammer and I put a hammer extension on it.

p15camborne: Interesting - My 1991 BLR does not have a folding hammer and, according to my factory service manual for BLRs, should not.  Perhaps someone added it on to yours in the past?  Anyhow, does the hammer extension interfere with the folding safety feature of the hammer when it is in the half-cocked position?

Browning's web site states that hammer extensions can't be used on the folding hammer models.

coyotetrapper1928 - I don't have a post 1995 BLR nor a service manual for one, but your question is an interesting one.  My gut feeling is that an exchange would be possible, though I do not know for a fact.  A side-by-side comparison might answer your question.

Oooops!    Guess I had a senior moment and was thinking of another gun.   I only hunted with my muzzleloader this year.  I just got my BLR out of the cabinet to look at.  According to the Browning site it's a '94.  My Citori is the '91.  My BLR has no hammer extension; so the folding safety works fine.  It does have a folding hammer.  My Leupold 2-7 Vari-x IIc scope sits high enough so no hammer extension is needed.  I bought the BLR  new.   I never modified it.  It's the last year for the steel receiver.  I tested that with a magnet to confirm my memory.  Sorry again.

Found this in the frequently asked questions section of Browning's website.

Q. Can a hammer extension be used on the BLR?
A. No. Browning does not recommend the use of a hammer extension
