I can get a Renington 788 .44 mag 18 1/2 inch barrel , the gun looks at 98-99% . What would be a good price to pay ?

                                       Thanks Kenny

Those are actually pretty nice guns Kenny. I seem to recall my now deceased best friend Billy Doss used to own one. The 788s were very accurate and were a super bargain for the price. But they don't hold value that well. I think you should be able to get one for $250 or less most of the time. I'd not personally wanna put much over that into one but if you really like it and want it price is not of that much meaning or isn't to me most times.

The 788s have become something of a cult item and I think the value would be quite a bit above that $250.  I've seen some that were one step above a tomato stake priced at $400 at various gun shows.
I paid $325 for the .243 that I had rebarreled into a .260 a couple of years ago.

Ouch, I've not noticed that around here yet but then they don't come up for sale all that often around here either. Goldhound is local to my area. Might be the prices on them have slipped upward here since I last saw one but the last one I saw had not yet jumped in price that much. In my opinion when they reach Model 700 prices they are no longer a decent buy.

They were accurate rifles, but a dog from a sales standpoint.  I've never seen a used one actually sell used for more than $225, here in New England - although they've sure been tagged higher, initially.

I think they mark them up too high to start because there are a few people that will buy them at any price. I think in a lot of cases the market tells them to lower their price. Some times a fool will pay the price. If you are in area that does not sell many nor have much of a demand then they go lower. I had a 788 in 222 and it sure was honey, shooting wise. Looks wise, there were and are better offerings. I did not have a lot of money at the time and traded it in + cash for a new 700 BLD VS that I thought I had to have. I sure wish I kept that old 788. It shot every bit as good as the 700 and weighed a lot less.  I would like to have another, but I am not going to pay $400 for one. Buying a used gun is a crap shoot. Why was it traded in if it was such a fine gun? In some cases it is traded in because they want a different cartridge, but some times they are traded in because they will not shoot or did shoot and do not any more. There are a lot of neglected guns out there. I think the 44 mag was kinda rare as was the 30-30. Most of them were sold in 222, 223, 243 and I think in the later years they sold quite a few in 308. I wanted one in 44 mag for a while and could not find one. I ended up getting a 1894 Marlin.

The gun is in a Pawn Shop a buddy of mine owns . Alot of times when he has a real good gun come out he will call me . The guy that pawned it got it from his Dad or Granddad and he is not a gun person . My buddy had the gun at $499.00 but I'm getting a lot better deal than that . Thanks for all your help on this gun .

By the charts I've seen my .44 mag was made in March 1968 .
