.357 MAX
« on: October 08, 2007, 02:58:23 AM »
Question--I have a factory .357 Max barrel that has been fired 1 time( looong story) and a NIB .357 Mag rifle. I want to make general purpose/ walking around/ utility/ fun gun. Now, with long chambers and some other factory issues, should I sell the Max and ream the Mag or sell the Mag and work with the Max? Or, maybe take up horse-shoes?

If it was me I would see if I could get the MAX to shoot. If I can get it to shoot then I would leave the 357 alone. If the MAX could not shoot well then I would think about reaming the 357 to a MAX, 35 Remington or some other suitable cartridge. I would then sell the MAX. If you can get the MAX to shoot, I would still hang on to the 357 for a later project. That is my 2 cents. :)

You could send them over to my house and then I could save you all of the hassle of sorting it out. ;D ;D ;D

I really liked my original .357 Mag H&R/NEF barrel and could shoot .360 Dan Wessons out of it. It finally did become a .357 Max and another .357 barrel I acquired became a .35 Remington. I also have an original 26" .35 Whelen RMEF barrel and am quite happy with my .35 calber H&R/NEF barrels right now. Of course if another .357 Mag barrel became avaiilable I would want it too!!!....<><....:)

  My vote is:
 1) keep em' BOTH and have the 357mag barrel re-chambered to 357/44 Bain & Davis.
 Or:
 2) just leave it as is, stop thinking of the .357 as a handgun round and start thinkin' about all that free MV you get from that barrel length that mag should fit the bill precisely for a woods bummin' gun from squirrels up to Whitetails!
 But:
DO NOT Under any circumstances take up horse shoes!! Those things are Dangerous!! But if you must, please have a trained professional take them off the horse first!!
 (don't ask! its a painful memory ....)

Well, keep us up to date one way or the other. Be interesting to see what kind of loads you end up with; and what kind of results you get.

I been fiddling around with a 357 mag,( converted to Max.) Handi for a while now. Be curious to compare observations.
