Pulling Arrows from 3D Targets
« on: April 09, 2007, 10:35:22 AM »
Anybody have a trick to pulling arrows out of those high density 3D targets.  I have tried the little rubber gripper, works ok. Also have tried using powder graphite, but that's a little messy.

Try using bar soap. I use Irish spring. Just rub it on the shaft that is going to penetrate the target makes them pull a lot easer

I just take a firm grip on the arrow shaft with one hand a few inches from the arrow, so my other hand will barely squeeze between hand and target, and then squeeze that hand slowly around the arrow.  The hand flattening out will put a lot of torque to remove the arrown from the target.

Around here (Upstate New York) there is a polymer gel called "Woody's Lube" (no kidding). It is a small bottle with a felt applicator that goes on easy and lasts a long time. It makes pulling carbon arrows very easy, especially on bad shots on virgin areas of the target.

Note, folks used to use Irish Spring due to the lanilin in the formula and it actually worked very well. However, they do NOT use it in the formula anymore so saop just isn't much help anymore.

You can actually purchase speciality Arrow lubes at online archery supply stores such as Lancasters. The best are CX's Lube and Woody's Arrow Lube. They also offer some excellent rubber power pullers. I carry both a puller and lube with me to all 3D events I shoot in.

Good luck and good shootin'

Here is what I do:
I turn around and put the back of my legs up against the target while straddling my arrow.  Then using two hands I pull my arrow out.
Easiest way I have found.

Don't shoot 3D targets that are hard to remove the arrows from.. LOL  ;D

I like my Glendale buck and the block for shooting, easy arrow removal. But if you have to shoot them hard 3D targets use Irish spring soap on the shaft.

1. lay target flat on ground with arrows pointing up
2. stand on target straddling arrow to be pulled (avoid jabbing arrow into crotch)
3. bend at waist , grasp arrow near target
4. holding tightly to arrow straighten back (once again avoid jabbing arrow into crotch)

I found that Dove bar soap works even better than Irish spring or Woody's. One thing I noticed about the lubes was it seemed to make the damn arrow burrow even deeper into the target. My buddy and I went to an Indoor competition once and damn near dropped out because both of us were wore out from pullin arrows after 3 targets.. Then one of the guys handed us a half bar of Dove. After we were done laughing our collective asses off he said to try it. I was shocked at how easy it was. Been using it ever since. Don't even need a rubber puller. BTW I shoot at a smidge over 307 fps with carbons and believe me those McKenzie targets are FOUL to pull out of if it was at 25 yards or closer without it. Give it a try. Its cheap. Easy. And WORKS! Just rub it around the shaft about 6 inches or so up. Don't have to go all nuts with it. Just a light hit and it will stay on for 2 or three shots. Just takes a sec and your hands and shoulders will thank you immensely.

I spray a product called 'Slide and Glide', that is nothing more than a lite silicone spray that lubes the arrows for easy removal.  Its quick and easy, and lasts for multiple rounds per spray.

A glove with the little rubber grippers on it kept near the target will help.  Just wrap the glove around the arrow. It increases your hand friction tremendously.

Roll up a paper towel, like a cigar, stuff it into a plastic tube or pvc pipe add caps and soak the towel
with amour-all.  Just insert the arrow into the center before shooting.  You can just spritz a little amour-all on the arrow before shooting.  its good for about 3-4 shots.
