K.E. of your set up and how it preforms??
« on: September 23, 2007, 05:57:53 AM »
Hi all,
I hope your all ready for bow season!  I was wondering if anyone new the Kinetic energy of the particular setup they are shooting and what the outcome is on game. I am currently shooting my new improved longbow and it makes about 38 ft-lbs. and I plan on using the Magnus snuffer broad heads.. My arrow weighs 627 gr.  Will I get sufficient penetration with this? I know a 2 blade style will insure pass thru  but I'm also more concerned with animal recovery. where I hunt 60 or 70 yds. is about all I can afford without recovery being an all day production ( very tough terrain). Thanks for your help - Kevin

Kevin: I do not know the kinetic energy of my set up.  I do, however, know if your bow is pulling anything around 50#, with the arrow weight and broadhead selection you have, you will not have a problem with whitetail as long as the Snuffer is placed in the 'boiler room'.  I have recently switched from 165 grain Snuffers for deer to 125 grain Wendsel Woodsmen heads.  I have switched from 2117 aluminum or custom cedar arrows to carbon arrows.  I use a 60# CariBow t/d recurve most of the time, ant I will use that bow this fall.  My arrows probably weigh out to about 475 grains total with inserts, wraps, fletch, nock, and broadhead.  Last year I had a shot at a large, lone doe at about 4 yards.  The arrow went through the lungs, and she took three or four steps forward stood there and fell  over.  Off the same stand about three weeks later, I took a 5 point buck (my mistake--I thought he was an 8 with his head behind some vines and junk--oh well...), and he, too kind of jumped forward once, stopped and looked back where he had been standing, then took two more smallish jumps, stood and fell over.  My total tracking distance last year was about 15 yards!  I guess what I am saying: just make sure the Snugger is right in the lungs, and they won't go far.  Make sure the deer are relaxed when you shoot, after the shot, stay very quiet, and let the Snuffer do its job.

Best of luck, Arch

Thanks for the feedback! I'm new to traditional shooting but I'm hooked..Btw My bow is a Homemade longbow pulling around 70# @ 28". It's the same bow that I posted pics of last January..the only difference is that I had to repair it with a fiberglass lamination. thanks again - Kevin

Anyone else???

Kevin: I remember the days of the 70 and 75# longbows!!  My first bow was a Howard Hill that pulled 87#!  I have since dropped poundage over the years to my comfortable 55-60#, in both my recurves and longbows.  I still have an Osage self bow on the wall that pulls in the neighborhood of 72 +/- pounds, but it only gets taken down periodically for a wipe down and placed back up on the rack.  Take care and have a great fall hunting season!

Use "cut on contact" broadheads, and stay away from anything with any type of "chisel point."
With "sharp razors" up front, even 385g arrows from 50lb draw longbows will sail through most any ribcage you come across.
With your setup you should be well above what is needed to get the job done.

Here's one for you, I read this in one of the last 6 issues of Traditional Bowhunter, not sure which one and not going to look for it right now but here goes anyway. Take your arrow weight in grains X 2.2 X arrow speed in feet per second divide by 1543.2. That will equal a value in lb/ft per second. Anything over 14.83 is or will be suitable for a moose/elk size critter. In my set up, a 56# longbow shooting a 547gr arrow at a speed of 163fps comes out to 12.71 lb/ft per second. I would not hesitate to hunt Moose size game with this set up. Another formula to debate is fun, but, Swampthing is right, a good 2 blade broadhead (my preference) through any ribcage its pretty much over. By the way, if you want to know why its multiplied by 2.2 or divided by 1543.2, your on your own. My filing system or lack thereof doesn't allow me to find things to easily, especially, when I don't feel like lookin'. But, it was in Traditional Bowhunter Magazine. Good Huntn' CRASH87
