Got my .35 Whelen

Well, I got my .35 Whelen, but I really need to get into reloading.  I noticed Double Tap Ammo has some really good .35 Whelen loads.  Do you guy's have any experience with this ammo?  Also, Federal Fusion looks good also.  I was going to use the Remington 200 grain for deer, to try it out before I go west and Alaska.  Thanks

Got any pictures of your new gun? I'm in the slow process of  having a new rifle built a .35 Whelen and am close to having it finished.

I'll try to get some posted tonight when I get home.  Is this your first Whelen?  What loads are you going to use?  From what I have gathered.  200 grains for deer, maybe black bear, 225 grain for elk, moose, and caribou.  250+ grain for grizzly-brown bear.  The hotest loads I have found so far are Double Tap. 

My Whelen is built on a commercial Mauser action, 22" barrel, glass bedded, nice walnut stock.  The barrel is not a varmit-bull type barrel, but is a little thicker than normal.  I need to mike it.

First one, 1927 Springfield action. I'll reload for it.
What does your rifle weigh? I owned and shot a Remington 600 in .350 Rem mag. but, the comb on the stock was too high for me to see the iron sights on that carbine, so thought I would try a Whelen.

I'll weight the rifle tonight on my bathroom scales.  It has a 3x9 Nikon scope on it.  It shouldn't weight over 8 lbs.  Just guessing.  I don't have iron sights, but have a one piece Leopold mount.  I want to put iron sights on in case I need them.  The guy I bought it from didn't have the right size at the time, and he would have to order them.  The one piece mount, can disassemble with one screw on the side, turn 90 degrees to take off, in case of scope failure.  S.B. what do you reload for and what powder, bullet weight, etc.?  I wanted to get everyones pet loads and try them myself, to avoid a lot of experimentation.   I have a question out in the reloading section, but not many responses yet.

Don't have a pet load for the Whelen yet? I reload for everything I have that shoots.

My Whelen and my Rem .300 WM both weight 9 lbs with scopes.  My .30-06 Mauser and my Ruger .308 both weith 7.5 lbs scoped.  That explains why my Ruger with Hornady light magnum ammo kicks harder than my .300 WM.  Haven't tried out the Whelen yet.  Probably will Saturday.  Will try to get pics on later tonight.

I have two Whelens, one is on a Mauser action, with an 18" barrel, and peep sites.  This is the only rifle I own without a scope.  The other is a NEF Handi Rifle.  It's from the RMEF run, but without the medalions.  In other words a plain Handi with a 26" barrel.  I'll get my reguler computer back Wednesday and try and post a picture then. 

I also own two .350 Rem Mags.  One is a Ruger M-77, the other is a Remington model 600.  The Remington also has an 18" barrel, and kicks like a mule.  I only shoot factories from the .350s.  I load for the Whelens, but can't remember what I load for them.  I do use a faster powder for the Mauser due to the short barrel.  And I only load 250gr bullets for them since I live in Grizzly country.

I hate to say it, but my last 3 batches from Double Tap have been BAD......I believe that the powder charges were all different.  Thanks to this I got into handloading.  I sent some of it back and got a refund of some new stuff but that was also no good.  I have a box of 350 woodlieghs left and I don't care to shoot them.  Bad ammo but great customer service.......Sorry for the news.

I haven't heard of Double Tap.  But IMR 4064 has always been my mainstay in the Whelen.  With powder being had to find here at times, I use 4064 in the 30/30, .308, .350, .35 Whelen and the .243.
