Refinish a Nickel Pistol?
« on: October 12, 2007, 10:41:05 AM »
Hey Guys,

I bought a little 2" Colt Detective special a while back and it's really a great little shooter.  It has a nickel finish and it's pretty rough but it shoots great.  The .32 Long is really an accurate round.  The nickel is scratched in a lot of places and someone scratched their initials "E. G." in the side.  I bought it cheap anyway and it is fun.  Is there anyway to refinish one of these for a decent price?  I doubt it but I'm not familiar with nickel.  I would probably spend more than I paid for it.  I guess I could just change my name so the initials would be correct.  Thoughts appreciated.  BT53

Im "told" Colt will do it, but I dont know what it would cost.  Im in the same position -almost- Ive got a Colt Trooper MKIII on lay-a-way from an auction.  The price was too good to pass on even though the nickel is badly worn on the barrel.  Im actually thinking of having it stripped and then given a high polish blueing, but thats just me.  Numerous Smiths can do the removal and re-nickel, but if you have Colt do it, then the value wont be lost, it will still "letter" as a factory refinish.  Im guessing the initials can be buffed out at the same time, as well.
