« on: October 09, 2007, 09:33:35 AM »
Has anybody taken game with this bullet. One of my 25 cal rifles shoots extreamly well with this moly coated bullet.

1 doe...with the 25-06 at 250 yards...110lbs field dressed...Quartering away shot...entered mid line 9" back...exited right shoulder...3/4" hole going in...1-1/2" hole coming out destroying some the shoulder meat...She dropped on the spot...Normally I use the 115 grain Silver BT with about the same results...and cheaper in price...

Thanks Mac.
That sounds like pretty good performance.
Remember you send me a few of those bullets, but some creep postie stole them.

So I bought a box and moly plated them. With the few I use for hunting deer I am not concerened about the price. The accuracy in my 257R Ruger#1 is outstanding at just under 1/2". Have not tried them yet  in my handi 257R.

Since I load these bullets 10thou into the  lands they are not interchangeable
between the two rifles. Got to watch so I have the right ammo for the
particular rifle.

I won't be able to re-load them in the Handi the same as the #1. But if they
are accurate 100 ft less vel wont be that bad.

Fred:

Try some of the 115grain Ballistic Silvertips...I'm developing some loads for the 25-06 that are giving awesome results...

Hi Mac
I hear these bullets are good but I have pretty well settled on the 100gr TSX.
That is if they shoot well in the particular gun.

My 25-06 is deticated for this bullet 3430ft and 100yrd groups at 1/4" or less.
My antelope rifle to go.

The 257R #1 is going to be used with the 110gr Accubond this year.

The 257R Handi has established it self with the 100gr Speer Hot Core, I toke
6 deer with that bullet. All one shot killes. This bullet is  super accurate
but greatly underated, because it is cheap.

The 25 Hunter is unbeatable with 100gr Hornady Interlocks. It has
established itself as the deer getter champion.

I really don't see any use for the heavier 115gr or 120gr bullets since I only hunt deer. Besides I hunt in very flat and open country and the lighter bullets shoot flatter for the ranges I shoot, rarely over 300. Usually I have lots of
time to makea good shot and if I can't make a good shot I won't shoot.

We have so many deer around, there is no need for a hasty shot. When I miss a deer it is always because the bullet hits grass, easy to do in flat country
specially when you have poor eyes.

Mac's really liking Retumbo in his 25-06, he's getting little groups at 300yds with 115gr CT Ballistic Silvertips at just under 3200fps. ;)

Reloder 22 is what I use in the 25-06 Ruger#1 and 100gr TSX,  the 257R Ruger #1 i use H4831 and 110gr Accubond and in the 257 Handi IMR4350 with 100 gr Speer Hot core. All three shoot 1/2" or less.

The Retumbo has shown real promise with the heavier bullets...and will be shooting more of it...as well as my Reloader 25 loads...I haven't gotten the velocities I was hoping for with the RL 25 yet......but I am a long way away from the top end loads on it...The RL 22 is good powder...but a bit too temperature sensitive too...I am going to try my ice chest test and see if it can be over come with magnum primers...

Mac.
According to QL Retumbo is a very good powder perhaps the best for a 25-06 Handi rifle. With a compressed load of 104% it reaches 51334psi and 3194ft/MV with a 115gr Silver Tip. This load burns the powder 100% which is excellent. That is with 66.0grH2o case volume.

Pmax MAP lists the cartridge at 65267, with this powder you can not get anywhere near this pressure wit Retumbo. I my experience you can't beat Reloder 22 in a strong lock up 25-06 which excludes the Handi.

With Reoder 22 and 101.3%fill ratio you get 3350 and 63133psi same bullet.

Reloder 25 is like Retumbo too slow for the 25-06 but with a 103% compressed load it will get you 3244ft @ 54677PSI with the same 115gr Silver Tip which is a bit better than Retumbo, but again excellent for the Handi.

One of the very good things of QL is the selection of powders for best performance with selected bullets. That does not mean a rifle will shoot the bast with that selection but chances are good in a Handi, and here we are
talking Handi. Low pressure with high velocity your Handi will love it.

I had to tap the cases a lot to get the 61.5 & 62 grains in...I am loading .004" off the lands with it and getting just under 3200fps with the 62 grain load...all loads measured  15' from the muzzle..

59 grains......Average 2975fps...ES 21fps

60 grains......Average 3025fps...ES 42fps

61.5 grains...Average 3160fps...ES..26fps

62 grains......Average 3185 fps..ES 47fps

Looks like the 2 accuracy nodes are 59 grains...and 61.5 grains...I'm sure with a little tweaking it might do a bit better...but I think I may have found about the perfect load with this bullet...The cases extract easily...and go completely back in sitting flush...so I think it will be the powder of choice especially since it is an extreme powder with little temp variance...RL25 might do good...but from reports over on Long Range Hunting...some of the guys are seeing a lot of variance with it...My velocities were really low with it...but haven't worked up to the Retumbo level with it yet...We will see...
