I'm hooked!
« on: October 31, 2007, 05:10:39 PM »
First trip to the range today to:
1.) break in the new muzzle loader, and
2.) break me into muzzleloading.

Set-up:
NEF Stainless Sidekick, 25ACP conversion, 2x7 Nikon Prostaff, 250 gr Shockwaves, 85 grains loose 777.

Let's just say I'm still geeked.

The consistency of the shot placements was amazing.
The scope adjustments were responsive.
The clean up was painless.
For once, everything just seem to fall in place.

What a great way to spend the afternoon.
Much more enjoyable than shooting a $15 box of shotgun sabots in 5 minutes or less.
(Next decision will be whether to leave the shotgun home on opening day.)

I just want to thank everyone whose brain I've picked for the last year with some of my noob questions.
Everyone sharing their knowledge and expertise in this area is what makes this forum so valuable.
Your help has been truly appreciated.

As time goes by I'll try different load and sabot combinations.
But for the time being I couldn't be happier.
Thanks again.

Welcome aboard the good ship Black Powder Fever.  Warning - there is no cure.  Now's the time to begin thinking about your next gun.

Please memorize the following.  There will be a test in the morning.

Semisane’s Ten Laws Of Muzzle Loading

1. Whatever worked yesterday will not work today.

2. Whatever works for your buddy will not work for you.

3. No matter how much gear you bring to the range, you will need something you left home.

4. Heavier or lighter bullets will probably shoot better than what you are using.

5. Heavier or lighter powder charges will probably shoot better than what you are using.

6. The best muzzle loader to have is one that loads from the muzzle - lock style and ignition methods are not relevant.

7. The more people watching, the worse you will shoot.

8. Dry holes happen (see law #7).

9. You don’t shoot often enough.

10. You need one more gun.

Semisane:

#3 on the list already happened.
After checking and double checking, I wound up leaving my powder measure at home.
Fortunately the guy on the bench next to me had a spare.

If the other things on the list are to happen, I just hope they don't happen as soon.
