Shortened 308 rifle pic

I had my Encore rifle barrel cut to 20" from 24".  It is way short now. Have not shot it yet, it may be loud. It is compact for sure. Should be great for crowded blinds, tree stands ect....  I only plan on placing 2 rounds in the cartridge carrier on the stock so as not to increase weight. I do not have a scale to weigh this rifle at this time, but it is relatively light.

You're gonna like it.  Mine's 16.25", not all that loud, not all that much recoil.

Yep.  I was trying to find a good caliber for a woods gun - something to shoot smaller to mid-sized game.  I wanted short barrel.  In searching around, I found this barrel (.308, heavy barrel) at Match Grade Machine and took it rather than wait weeks for a custom build.  Now I can shoot 110 grain for varmints up to heavier loads for larger stuff.

When you shoot you'll want earplugs.  When I was out I didn't have my earmuffs with me, so I used a couple cotton balls.  Worked fine - not too loud at all.

I bought a standard 308 barrel and had a friend cut it and put an 11 degree crown on it. I considered shorter but was unsure. This process was cheaper and much faster than a custom barrel. I gotta get this gun to the range.

how much was the barrel from mach grade machine? cheese head what type of bullet are you using i can't tell in the picture but it looks like moly coated?

The bullet in the pic is the Combined technology partition gold 150 grain. Midway had them on sale for 10 bucks a 100, so I bought 1000. An accurate and inexpensive bullet, should perform well on game. That's what I like about 30 caliber bullets, huge variety and sale prices.

I forget exactly how much the barrel was - around $375, I think.  I bought one that was in stock.

I finally got this little rifle out to the range yesterday. I did not get the accuracy I expected, 2-3 inches at 100 yards. I believe it/I can do better. I only used one hand load and will do some tweaking of hand loads. The bullet was a 150 grain Partition Gold charged with RL-15. Also a target designed for cross hairs in the 4x Burris.

thats not too bad for where i hunt at. it would be good enough for deer but i don't think it will be good for those longer shots. if you still can't get it to shoot better i would take it back and have then reinspect the crown

I used Federal Power Shoks - 150gr SP to zero mine.  Less than 1" at 100 yards and less than 2" at 200 off of a bag.  Actually, off of a backpack.

I picked up a vise to try to do some precision zeroing, but haven't had the time to go play again.

BTW, Wal-Mart had the Federal 10gr for sale for 10.97 a box of 20.  I bought all I could find.

the local walmart here dosen't have any ammo(right at $30) for sale other than muzzle loading bullets.($5) they had this 15 year old at the register the other day and he wanted to buy some ml bullets or horanday sabots and they told him he wasn't old enough. his father was behind him and said that it was just lead well they told him since he had said they were for his sons ml he could not buy them. isn't that a bunch of bs!

i think that is pathetic. i have been in this sport for over 20yrs and heard many things about shooting but that is the most werid and stange yet. why is it restricted that i don't understand. we might as well start moving to mexico.

yup. i try to stay away from the walmart for anything. but some times they do have a good deal on summit tree stands. they had the summit vipar on sale for $150 and since the the gun shop had it for $300 i went ahead and bought it.

Its not just WallyWorld - my local gun shop won't sell minors reloading components (including lead slugs), paint balls or even refill CO2.  I asked the guy in charge of the paint ball department about it, and he says it is company policy because of liability insurance.  So, don't blame the store as much as you blame the lawyers and insurance industry.

I guess I am glad I live in a small town, and an area where it is routine for kids to hunt and shoot.  Sporting goods stores follow the laws, but don't make their own.
