Anyone chrono their 26" 300mag....
« on: June 09, 2003, 04:11:46 PM »
I had a 26" 300mag but,I cut it down to 16.5"......This is what I lost...
26" barrel with 180gr factory ammo went 3081 fps....
16.5" barrel with 180gr factory ammo went 2720 fps.

WHY?

My 300 shoots 180 grain Federal Preimums at 2990 clocked. Why does one want a 300 that shoots as slow as a 30-06?

I can deal with that answer. I like short easy to point rifles when the shooting is quick. The fact I use a Marlin 444 when hunting behind dogs or in real thick stuff should show I can see the need for handiness. Also if you where going to cut a barrel an Encore makes sense as you have the choice of drop in replacements.

I guess I was thinking that when someone buys a 300 he is thinking about needing the power and range of a 300. My 300 has a 26" tube and really only gets pulled for big stuff or for places where they might be a tad far away. But I see your point. Thats what makes a hoss race.
