Misfires
« on: October 09, 2007, 09:06:30 AM »
I purchased a last year model huntsman new from walmart after the guy who special ordered it never came to pick it up.  The first 20 primers I put through it didn't fire on less than 3 hits each.  Sent it back to H&R and they replaced some trigger parts (don't have invoice in front of me, sorry).  Turns out there is a known problem with light pin hits on some of the huntsmans.  H&R was great and pretty fast -- only 2 weeks start to finish and they threw in a bag of the primer tabs and refunded my shipping costs to get it there.   So if you have any misfire problems, don't hesitate to get them on the phone. Customer service was pretty quick to admit that it was a known problem with the trigger unit.

thanks,
mike

mis-fires seem to be a common complaint. the 35whelen misfiring was a hot topic, a few complaints have been generated in the rimfire section and aleast two in the ML section. although the whelen issue seemed to be about chamber/case dimensions causing a no-fire situation, NEF fixed ( at least one ) by modifying the hammer strike. likewise, the rimfire and now the ML situation have been addressed the same way.  by simple observation, the culprit and remedy is the hammer strike.
NEF is more then willing to fix this issue, and does so in quick order, which is what we should expect... it may be just a factor in thier mass porduction and a slip in manufacturing processes... but its more common of a complaint as of late. its great of them to admit it too. great company, great products, this is how i spend my hard won money, every rifle, shotgun muzzleloader i own is a NEF/H&R

Well, when I took her out to the range, the misfires are still there, just not as prevalent.  Out of the 25 rounds I shot, 5 had light hits.  NEF has been great, offering to do whatever they could to get me out there for this year's deer season, but I don't want to rush it.  They did mention that Olin/Winchester has had a reputation of having hard primers that NEF rifles have a problem with and I was using winchester primers.  I'm going to switch to CCI and see if that makes a difference.  But after the first CCI misfire, she'll be going back to NEF again.  All in all, a very disappointing introduction to NEF products, but great customer service, so I'm still happy with my purchase assuming we can get the rifle up to snuff and make it a reliable hunting weapon.

hoenstly i dont know much about primers, other then what they do. if there is a rating for hardness or quality, thats something im not sure about. mentioning that NEF stated , winchester had hard primers, reminds me of a post that said remington had them too. see, 35whelen rounds that can be readily found at gunstores and marts are made by remington primarily, so the majority of whelen owners shoot them, unless they reload.  not that i doubt what you say in the least, but when i read " they ( NEF ) did mention that Olin/Winchster has had a reputation of hard primer" .. this has me wondering if they dont say that as a catch all.  there is a caviat here, pointed rounds ( for semi auto use ) uses harder primers, so as to not have a round fire in the mag tube. some guns/ammo's get around this by uses flat nose bullets ( think marlin 30-30, 336 lever action ).. so maybe  makes use harder primers for all of these, they dont know what round will used in what gun, marlin giude gun in 35whelen, or same round in a NEF single shot. i dont know why NEF cant beef up thier hammer strikes anyhow. dont let this issue, put a bad taste in your mouth for NEF's. they have thier quirks yes, but they are a great product at a good price.
but your talking a ML here, what primers are you using to have this issue ? winchester 209's, what type ? i use remington cleanbore's in the green box
i would say that the CCI ML primers will end up being a more relialable choice, all be it , not as clean in my experience.
my huntsman setup, i use the remi cleanbore's with teflon tape on the breech plug threads to ensure removal later, lol .. after haveing a problem removing the plug using CCI's in the white tin. my huntsman was a package, with a sb2 reciever and a .243 win barrel, factory fitted, my firing pin is the smaller rifle style, not a shotgun style, not sure if that matters or not. i also removed all the sights, replaced the screws with plugs and mounted a shotgun scope on it. ok ive went on long enough..
