Looking for info on Alliant Re 10x powder, 30-30
« on: October 13, 2007, 09:59:39 AM »
Has anyone come across any data on using 10x in the 30-30. Or where to look.  Info for the discontinued  Re12 powder but none for its replacement. Thanks.

AmmoGuide shows 40 different loadings using the Alliant/Herc powder filtering.  But no RE-10 yet....guess it might still be to new or no one wants to share their magical one hole group formula?

Speer Manual #14 - for Reloader 10X as follows...130 grain start 26.5, max 30.5 for 2273 fps; 150 grain start 24.0 Max 28.0 for 2117 fps; 170 start 22.5 max 26.5 for 1972 fps. This was using CCI 200 primers, of course and Winchester brass in a 20" barrel. When using reloading data always start low and work your way up slowly. Reloader 7 gives better velocity in the 30-30 over all than Reloader 10X with the lighter bullets.

Thank you!!
That was disappointing because the Lyman 47th book shows the starting load with Rx12 at 2311fps and max at 2559 fps with a 150gr bullet.

Hmmm have you tried H335 powder in the 30-30? with light 130 grain bullets it works very well and I have also used it with the 150 grain bullets with exceptional accuracy. Just a suggestion  ;D

What are the primers your using because I've never had anything that liked H335.
The most accurate 30-30 loads in a Contender and Marlin I found was 110 speer HP,125 spitzer [ shooting the Marlin single shot] with IMR 3031. Working up loads for a Win94 and so far no luck on anything.
I quit using the  3031 because the smoke stunk and would give me a headache. So much for being macho.

Hi darkwing,

I first used WLR then switched to Rem 9 1/2 primers I use Winchester cases exclusively as the bolt face has been machined to match the Wnchester case head which is undersize. Now I am reluctant to post teh actual grains used because I started using this load after reading an article in Petersen's Rifle shooter. Soup up the 30-30. My rifle is a custome bolt action and th action would normally have be made into a .308, .243 or some othr modern high pressure round so actions strength in not a problem. Also being a bolt action with stahggered box magazine I use spitzer or pointed bullets. Velocities are around 2800 fps for the 130 grain Hornady Spire Point and 2750 fps for the Sierra 150 Grn Flat point bullet.

The person who ordered the rifle built specified Winchester 170 grain factory ammo and the rifle was built around it right down to the magazine length so I cannot use 150 grain spitzers as they require seating too deeply in the case. Any bullets over 135 grain in weight need to be of flat point or round nose configuration but as yet I have not achieved good accuracy with the 150 grain round nosed bulltes. This is how it shoots using the 130 grain bullets and H-335 powder :-

The group is 3 shots taken froma rest at 100 yards.

This is a sight in target when I was setting up the scope and rifle for this load. The top group is the first three fired I then over adjusted and took the fourth shot which went too low. the final two shots were about right and I had only loaded a few rounds.

The rifle has a 6x42 scope fitted.

OK I'm speachless but WELL DONE!!!!
It would be a possible load for the Rem 788, Encore,SB2  frame H&R and maybe a Marlin.

Hi Darkwing,

Well most of the credit must go to the rifle builder it is a superb rifle and of course the  Keplinger single sett trigger also helps giving a safe light weight with perfectly clean break. At one session on the Bisley Short Siberia range three different people took one shot each from the prone position and the three shots were still inside the 2" V bull of the NRA target. The marker reported that the three shot group was less than an inch but I never saw it for my self as it was patched out.

More than likely I will taking this rifle on a little stalking trip this weekend although as I don't get down to my little patch much now so luck will pay a huge part in any success as I have not been able to scout much plus the next door farm is laying idle right now so the patterns of the deer have been disrupted. So fingers crossed.

Any modern action suitable for the .243 win or .308 Winchester cartridges would be suitable for higher pressure 30-30 loads.  I worked with the Petersen's data which was obtained using a pressure barrel in a ballistics lab but as usual safe handloading practice must be observed.

Good luck Brithunter,
Big game hunting here on the high plains of Texas is a rare and expensive treat for me. Its usually my busiest time of the year. My favorite hunting gun is the Winchester 30-30. So a couple of months ago a friend took me to a Cowboy silhouette featuring 30-30s and buffalo guns. Now I'm hooked!!!! The only problem is my sight elevator is maxed out at 200 meters with factory loads so any reloads have to be the same speed or faster at 38,000 psi.

Hmmm I would suggest that perhaps a receiver sight might be a good idea then  ;) as for Deer hunting, well here in the UK we have some deer in season all year, there are six species of deer huntable and Muntjac have no close season as they breed all year round although as yet they do not cover the whole country. Roe deer are huntable almost all year but it switches from Does to Bucks as do Fallow. They have only recently (October 1st) introduced a close season for Chinese Water Deer whose range is limited then there is Sika and of course Red Deer who both have seasons and limited range.

There is no public land to hunt over here and so permission must be obtained and most of the time this means paying or leasing the rights so things are not that different. My little spot is tiny but faces down into a small gully so I have the opposite hillside as a backstop, the gulley has a small stream running through it and is wooded, the deer (Roe & Fallow) use it as a highway from the neighbouring farm so although it's tiny I get deer crossing it and browsing in the paddock in the centre. The major drawback is the wind if it's from one direction I cannto get into the place without all the deer knowing as I only have one way in and out.
