Elk Season opens in Oregon
« on: October 19, 2007, 02:53:21 PM »
General Cascade  elk season opens tomorrow in Oregon.
This year I will hunt with my 54 Hawken, with Hornady Great Plains 425 Gr. HB-HP
Looks like a pretty potent slug, but was wondering about penetration with the hollow point?

I used the 50cal 385G HPHB great plains on three cows. All one shot kills. Bullet on all three was found against the hide.

May your shot be straight, and best wishes!

I have always thought that solid nose would be better than hollow points on elk. [ penetration, rather than expansion ]

My 54 with a 1-36 twist shoots the 460 buffalo bullet quite well with 90FF. [round nose solid]

My 50 barrel, 1-30 twist shoots the Hornady 410 GP, pushed by 115FF.

My groups at 100 yds went from 5-7"s to under 2"s with the use of "wads" under my bullets.

Best of Luck, and Enjoy!

Day 4 and still haven't seen a single elk, but it's nice just to get out of the house, and into the wilds.
Three days left to go, so still having a ball! :)

NW Hunter or anyone else:  I am learning what I can before taking up muzzleloading in Oregon. I am clueless about something. Oregon is mandating either a "PRB" as you all call it, or, a conical that must be less than two times the diameter...so, if I get this correctly, a conical must be say for a .54  no longer than 1.08  .....do I have that right?  All the projectile manufacturer websites I go to don't tell a guy how long the projectile is. How do you figure this up front? Take calipers to the sporting goods store?

Good luck with the hunt....I am betting you get into them with this weather we are getting.

Rogue Ram, I don't know where we get our Game and fish law makers from (LA prob.), but we do have some screwed up regulations in Oregon. How could we have a patched round ball longer than more than twice the dia. of the barrel?

I don't even hunt the ML season , but I do use my front stuffers to hunt the general firearms season. Any type of projectile is permitted then! Any of the conicals, or prb's  for Muzzle loaders would be legal to use in Oregon during the ML season. Just stay away from the sabot's! or polly patches

Never saw an elk the whole season! The area I hunt(the high cascades) was really changed over the summer with heavy logging. I think next year I'll hunt the coastal range!

Good luck to you! Have you purchased a ML? and if so, what do you have?

No sir, haven't purchased anything yet. Not sure what route to go, but likely I'll do a Lyman rifle of some sort. I have plenty of time: I have so many preference points combined with limited time (one big hunt a year) that I'll do antelope centerfire next year, followed by either deer or elk the next couple years.....I can pick the choice of the choice hunts, then start back at zero.

I live in NW Oregon where there should be tons of animals, but due to the stupid bubbas poaching at night and the predation, there aren't many animals around this year. Last year this time I had several bucks on my little farm every day; this year, none. I went out on a cooperative detail with a law enf agency recently working after dark in the area around where I live; what goes on when you and I leave the woods as hunters would leave you SHOCKED. I always thought I could do western rifle on the years I didn't draw a tag; those days appear gone sad to say, at least on public or timber co. prop open to the public. I have a western tag but can't get out the door to save my life (newborn in the house), so probably pass on elk too this year. Muzzleloading would get me away about every other year it appears, and if we go out of state, it could be an every year thing. I have a great place to shoot and learn 365 days a year all to myself....so just starting to get things figured out.

Give your logged off area a year.....I would think with new growth and the thing quieting down you may well have the elk right back in there.

Good luck!
