Putting a scope mount on a Stevens 30.06

My Local shop has a brand new stevens 30.06 for $199.00.

How hard is it to mount a scope mount on it?

Not hard at all. Just buy a Savage long action mount. You can buy them in several flavors. One peice, two piece, Traditional, Weaver are just a few choices. Just make sure you purchase your rings to match the type of mount you buy. If you buy a Weaver style mount, buy Weaver style rings. I prefer the Weaver style, but everyone has their preference. More than likely, you can purchase the mounts and rings at the same store you bought the rifle. I always degrease the screw holes and screws, then put blue lock tight in the holes before mounting. Mounts have different screw heads. Most are slotted or Allen, but some are Torx. Just make sure if it is slotted that your driver bit fits the slot. A poor fitting bit can mean a buggered up slot or one damaged so bad that it would have to be drilled out and replaced. Torque it down real good, just not so much that you snap the head off (been there done that). I replaced the barrels on my two Stevens and I drilled and tapped them for 8-32 screws, those suckers are not coming out or going to loosen up. Good Luck to you.

Do not be a stranger. Stop in once in a while and read the posts. There are lots of different categories to look at. You can gain a lot of wisdom from just reading. If you have any other questions as you go along (and you will) post a question in the appropriate forum. Some one will come along a answer it for you or at least point you in the right direction.

It sounds like you are new to center fire rifles. If this is the case, make sure you give your rifle a through cleaning in side and out including the bore. Re lube the rifle with a good rust preventative of you choosing. Some places will mount and bore sight your scope for you. I mail order mine, and do it myself. If you have not already bought your scope, Do not buy one that is too high powered for the task at hand. I assume this is a hunting rifle. I think that a fixed 4X or 6X is about perfect for a hunting rifle. If you want to get into a variable then a 2X - 7X or a 3X to 9X would fill the bill. Just keep in mind that the more you get, like variable, AO and hihger powers add to the cost of the scope. Buying a quality scope is more important than the the power or features. Post a question in the optics forum and you will get all kinds of answers. I urge you do just that and make up your own mind, what suits you. I know that there are lots of guys that think you need a 20X scope for your rifle. Like I said post the question and then you can make up your mind. The main thing is; to buy the best scope you can afford.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on our new rifle.  I recently got the same rifle and modified ,

Choosing a scope base for this rifle is a bit tricky.  first you need to select the scope and then measure that scope's mounting length.  I now have a K4 on mine and the mounting
length is 5 3/8".  From there I had to find a base that spaced the rings close enough for my scope.  The 1-piece Ironsighter base from midwayusa.com fit and wasn't expensive but it was at least 1/4" higher than it needs to be.  I had to lift my head a little to center on the scope so I tried a 2-pice Burris tactical base.  They are lower and feel more natural to be but the rear base hangs over the chamber which bothers me.  I plan on cutting it one of these days. 

After all my effort and searching, I realized that I should have just bought the inexpensive Weaver 2-pieces bases and an the extended front base.  They fitl perfectly, look good, mount the scope low and are the lease costly solution. 

BTW, $199 is a steal! There are no other rifles that come close to this value, even at $300.  Check my recent post "Pimped Stevens 200" and see how accurate these puppies are.

Wow, you are one lucky son of a gun to find a Stevens for $199.  The cheapest I've seen them was for $300.  Weaver makes a tactical 1 piece base, which offers many mounting slots to set proper eye relief.  At least the Stevens has the round rear receiver, which everyone carries bases for.

Weaver makes an extension front base that allows the shorter scopes to be mounted on the long action quite well. I think it is  #402.

I have the 7mmRM also long action. I bought a 1 piece mount from DedNutz, really well made and completely reliable. These are $55 and I'm gradually putting them on all my rifles. Bought all mine off their website but they also answer the phone!!

I recently bought a scount mount from Dednutz.com.  I can't recommend them enough.  They make the mount and rings all out of one peice of steel.  There's less things that could wiggle loose and it they are very reasonably priced.  It's so much nicer and cleaner looking than getting a mount and rings setup.  I have one myself and I can't say enough good things about it!

Well, I picked up my Christmas present ($199.00) yesterday and some Weaver scope bases (2).

I carefully followed LaOtto222 and Smitty's advise and mounted my base pads and scope.

I will bore site it later today and hopefully shoot it this weekend.

My NY state hunting trip  is scheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so hopefully all will be ready .
