Who's crazy?
« on: October 22, 2007, 04:54:39 AM »
Is it me that's crazy, or the sellers? I have been looking around for a sadle gun to actually carry on horse back. Been looking for a used Winchester 30-30 because they are smaller and lighter than a Marlin. But I can not even think of paying $750.00-$899.00, like I have been seeing them priced lately. Are they realy getting these asking prices? I have only seen them at Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, and not at any smaller gun shops around here. But if that is what they are realy going for I guess I'll re-think this choice and look at something else.
The only gun I ever sold was a model 94 that I sold for $75.00 when I thought I wouldn't need a "little gun" like that anymore. Boy was I dumb!

Well, it appears so DDelle. Since Winchester folded, the prices have gone up. Gun shows I think are selling them considerably cheaper. I hung on to mine. Dad bought it new in 1957, and gave it to me. It's now almost 51 years old, and is my all time favorite. I laugh when guys on these forums say that a 3030 is not powerful enough for game like elk, and then applaud the hunter that kills one with a bow, or pistol. They (the Model 94s in 3030) truly are hard to beat.

There is a pawn shop 25 miles from here that has two one $250 and one $275 they did have three but I brought one home for $200. The blueing is a little rough, worn whatever you want to call it otherwise they look good. Presaftey models. The shop is in Henderson Ky

I saw a few a couple weeks ago at a gun show for the $250 price range.  Lots were priced more.  The lower priced ones were post 64s AE that would be shooters, not collectible.  Pre 64s started in the $450 range and on up.

It cracks me up! Ever since Winchester folded, there were a number of people who went around and bought up as many new Winchester levers they could find in the stores. They were thinking (In my opinion) that they were gonna be gold. I can't see paying that for a newer model. The fit and finish was no where near what was produced in the recent past. Gimme a good used Winny or Marlin any day. -g

I still see them at the gun show from 400 to 550 depending on the shape, some exceptions are in the 600 range, but these are looking in real good condition.
Saw a 30-30 in a small gun shop a couple months ago for $380...and it had a good bore,  bluing worn, and a couple of screws buggered up, but was serviceable.  I think that one was 1958.  A decent deal I thought.
Gander Mountain...I don't even go into there anymore, the prices of their guns are 100 to 150 bucks above anyone else, and so is most of there stuff. Last time
I forced myself to go in there I told them what I thought of charging ABOVE retail, way above retail.   They didn't used to be like that when they first came to
this area.  Hit the small gun shops and gun shows, you can find a Winchester 30-30 for a reasonable price, and if it needs a couple screws, or some scrubbing, no big deal, as long as the rifling is still OK.

Boy are ya'll going to be pissed !
Went in to a local police supply / gun shop and asked if they had any win. 30/30 's . Well they had one looked like new except it was missing part of the rear sight ( the blade with the 2 screws ) . Well they asked for $150.00 so i countered with $ 100.00 we settled on $ 120.00 ! its an angle eject , Checkered wood XTP and no added safety .
The crown is still blue and the bolt face has no brass stain .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
